Creaking Bike / desparate

Might be the shoes, i.e. the contact point between the cleats and the shoes. My Specialized MTB Team
shoes creak, sometimes the left, sometimes the right one, not too nois, but the noise is clearly
"shoe" noise, not that of falling trees.

Greased Pedals Adjusted Gears

Check the chainring bolts and seats (mating faces). Any metal-to-metal contact is suspect.

My 2003 Truvativ Elita cranks and GigaPipe BB are creaking; and I'm beginning to think it's the
chainrings. Sounds weird; but it's worth a look. Might want to grease and re-install 'em. I'd try
greasing the spindles on my Truvativ ISIS BB; but the manual says explicitly *not* to grease the
spindle. That could the problem, I guess. My creaking is very loud, and just like yours it happens
while standing, sitting, anytime; but especially when I'm really hammering. That's when it's really
bad - drives me nuts!

I had similar creakings on my bike, with both the crankset and the saddle.

The first fix was to replace the adapter nut that locks the bottom bracket on the left hand side.

The second fix, the saddle, was a little time consuming. I went through the steps of greasing every
part one by one and the final fix was to use a silicone based lubricant on the ends of the rails,
where they are molded into the plastic shell. Since then my sanity is back 🙂

This probably isn't the problem - but it was for me, so maybe it's worth a look.

The paint had worn off the rear dropouts on my bike - exposing bare alu and the skewer/hub/dropout
interface was creaking. A little grease fixes it, but has to be reapplied every so often.

The to clues for me were:

- Only happened when pedaling

- Changed in character depending on gear and pedaling force

As you've probably guessed by now, there are a lot of possibilities.

One more: the other unexplained noise (wouldn't really call it a creak) I had finally revealed it's
cause when the drive-side crank broke. The edges of the break were discolored - indicating that it
had been cracked for some time before that...

Rub the pedals and cleat with wax or soap. Put a little grease on the inside of the dropouts and on
the lever end of the QR.

Um, my Gigapipe BB (for mtb) said specifically TO grease the spindle:

"grease the stops and spindle". However, it says to use loctite on the threads instead of grease,
and the entire thing wasn't loctited when mine came, just a band of it. My bike is creaking like a
mofo too, same situation, so I have a feeling we have a common problem. I might take the BB out and
just grease the threads, to see if it stops that infernal racket.

Often overlooked, a very sneaky creak, might be the cables in the housing up front. Would creak
almost all the time, except when just coasting along in a straight line.

I had just such a mystery creak. Went away when I re-pack the rear hub. The hub can cause a creak in
sync with pedal rotations since it responds to the increasing pressure in mid-stroke. In my case,
the noise was loudest on climbs. You might check that out.

Warm some Lindseed oil and dribble a wee bit into the seattube...let dry-try that. Sometimes the
miter of the seasttube/downtube to BB shell isn't great and there is some movement down there.

Sounds like most of the obvious are already covered otherwhere in the thread. A couple of really
sneaky ones I was reminded of recently: Make sure the post is well-greased in the frame, I had one a
couple of weeks ago that I couldn't track until someone else sat on bike and I listened. Seat tube
was moving enough to creak against the bottom end of the post (older steel bike, long post). If the
front derr is band-style, take it off and put a film of grease around the inside of it where it
clamps, grease the bolt thread at the same time. This one drove me nuts for a while, because
everything else had been done, and redone. It's a really sneaky one. Make sure that whoever had the
BB out cleaned the threads, greased the threads, and put grease between the LH cup and the BB body.
And reinstalled everything to the appropriate torque. I've noticed that Ultegra BB's do tend to
develop a signature creak after a while (1-2 yrs), and this quiets them right down. Eamon.

I have now taken the cleats off my shoes - they are currently soaking in grease - but I cant
beleive this was the problem as I had ridden one footed with either foot and still the creak. It
happens in the saddle, out the saddle, but not when freewheeling.

Heres the question - if my greased cleats don't cure the problem - what is the most likley culprit
? - I am so desparate I am considering starting to buy new parts - the ones I have in mind are:-

I had creaking once, of which the source became evident when I took the chain off and found the
cranks would not spin freely -- crank axle was too tight. But it sounds like you've already
checked that out.

Can you get it to creak when pedaling on a stand? If so you could have someone go around with a
stethoscope (or just a short length of hose) to try and pinpoint it.

How warm should the linssed oil be ? - and why does it have to be warm ? How long should I give it
to dribble down ? and how much is wee bit ? is this the same stuff you used to put on cricket bats ?

I have creaking too. But it only occurs on the left side when I put a bit of pressure on the pedal
(just spinning the crank doesn't result in a creak at all).

I'm thinking it might be related to the pedal or the BB b/c when I do put some pressure on it the
pedal seems to tick, or click into place, as if adjusting or something. I use clips and straps, so
it's not the shoes or anything attached to pedal. Could it be the pdeal? Or is it the BB? What
should I do?

You have many options:

1. Spray the whole thing with WD-40. Especially the tires.
2. Buy a new bike. Throw the old one in the garbage.
3. Switch sports - curling is squeak/creak free.

I waited too long, and now I sit typing this with my nose as I am a bit 'tied up' The padded walls
keep the creaks out though, so its not all bad.

I had a really annoying creaking for ages - mainly on uphills, or hard cranking! I went through
_everything_!
