  1. Who would have thought that, first real climb and one minute down on
Basso and Simoni after 5k. Hope he's got a good reason !

Ouch. He's 3'15" back now. That's gonna be tough.

Yep 3'17" to be precise, Eurosport commentators seem to think he might
had some issues these past days that were kept quiet. That would be
good news for the future because if he's in a normal shape that's
going to be a problem for him...

The other thing is that he can't help chase Simoni down. So even if he
had something left he wouldn't be able to help drag the chase to the
leaders. I wonder if that'll be the story of how he finished so far
    back?

I doubt it, he was just out of it, 6' on the line !

    I don't know....could it be--as he's said all along--that he is riding not to
win, but in support of Simoni, and he's doing the Giro to prep for the TdF in
July? No, that's simply unthinkable. There must be some other reason, right?

We'll have to see what comes out in the interviews. It's possible he
backed off once he thought his job was done and finished with a little
less energy expended. If he and the team are smart that's the way they
present it. Makes them all look good. Even if he was cooked there's
still a way to turn it into a positive.

  8. One reason, and it begins in July (and perhaps letting Simoni have one
last [inevitably futile] bash is financially rewarding for young
Damiano). No way he was going full gas.

I bet heart rate data on Cunego on this climb would be amusing. He'll
probably win the next three stages now that Simoni is safely without a
    Lampre rival (for 3rd place).

Italian teams are silly and this Giro is proving it.

It's a better story than he just cracked today and didn't have it. It's
not Cunego's fault that Simoni couldn't finish it off. The best spin is
that Cunego did everything he could for the team and Simoni came up
just short today, but they're both feeling good for tomorrow.
Makes everybody look godd and hard to rpove that's not what happened
unless someone on the team starts mouthing off.
Spinning has more than one meaning in cycling.

Actually, what I meant was that Simoni wasn't in pink at the time. The
team had nothing to defend, besides, it was Basso that was doing all
the forcing anyways, so it's not like they would have been wasting
    Simoni's efforts.

    thanks,

Cunego's had a lot of pressure on him. That can cause you to crack,
especially when you're so young! He's probably relieved to have the
    pressure off.

"It should at least give Lampre time to collect themselves, with Cunego, who
finished six minutes down, admitting that he feels relieved to have been
released from the immense pressure that has been placed on him"

cut from procycling.com Fri 20th May

Does this 6 minute deficit now give opportunity to go for mountain stage
    wins?

    Why is this in French?

    -Sonarrat.

  20. No, expecting him to come and win consecutive home GTs is a bit too
much to expect from a guy his age, especially considering he was racing
hard all season winning the last monument (his second hit I might add).
Cunego has way too much class to fall in to the same category as those
"one hitters" from recent Vueltas like (struggles to remember the
names...) Especially that one dude that attacked his team leader and
built his whole victory and subsequent market value increase in what
amounts to a handful of days with super form. He was able to stay close
in GC without being perceived as a threat until late in the tour and
then rode a few excellent days in the mountains and a fantastic closing
ITT. Casero's victory was even weaker since he never carried the golden
fleece on the rode and failed to win a stage. Compare those victories
to Cunego (who took the leadership not just from his team leader but
also the defending champion and he did it straight away. Unlike
"whats-his-name" (who attacked "baby face" late in the race), Cunego
had to fight off all the other contenders with a divided team. He also
won stages of each type, with sprints, superior climbing and time
trialing. The way he completely dominated that Giro demonstrates that
if for some reason he fails to win another Giro, it will be clearly
from some for of physical or mental illenss. He just does not have
enough yearsexperience to know just what he did right WRT preparation
last year. He is still learning how his body responds. If he had not
won last year, he probably would have been asked by Martinelli to
prepare to win the 2006 Giro. In fact, I don't recall hearing anyone
involved with the team indicate at any point that he would defend the
title this year. The simple fact that even with all of the sponsorship
shell games both he and Simoni are still on the same team indicates to
me that even in private the only circumstance in which he would go for
victory would be in the 2004 situation repeated itself (in that Cunego
just was so much stronger than Simoni that riding for him would likely
have thrown the race away). My final evidence is that Cunego even at
his young age raced to win all the way through October. If he had
planned on defending his title, I think he would have rested a bit on
his laurels and made that much more effort to assure his preparation
was focused on this year. I am not saying that racing in October would
prevent a win the following June (Basso does not seem to think so, but
then he is the first guy in a very long time that is going for GC in
the 2 biggest GTs) but I am saying that most teams that expected a
repeat win would have likely revised his schedule to be more sure of
rest and then solid prep, especially for such a young guy that went
from deep in the rankings to the very top in less than a year.

In summary, (nothing personal, but...) it is not a question I would
expect from someone that claims to be educated about racing bikes at
    the highest level.
