Cycle shed security

Apparently theft of cycles has recently become a big problem here, according
to the Chief Superintendent for Suffolk Constabulary Ipswich sector (he was
even on the radio talking about this, not often you hear a cop of such
senior rank talking about bicycle theft!).

There was a thread about this a not too long ago - I'm sure someone
will quote it or send a link.

I have a padlock on my shed with my bike in, but was reluctant to do so
because it gives the impression that there's something worth stealing
inside. Not sure what other people's take is on this. Someone
determined could easily get into the shed (e.g. by unscrewing the door
hinges!) but at least it would stop the opportunist.

Half-decent padlock on door.
Screws on hinges and lock shackle thingy that can't be unscrewed.
Bit of cardboard inside window so they can't see the nice shiny bikes
inside.
Anchors like what you said.
Security light triggered by person moving near shed (but not triggered by
cats or bushes/trees waving in the wind etc)

In that case the only viable option is to leave the bikes in the house
and you move into the shed.

Security is a thought provoking problem. A solution I use is to lock
all of the bikes together through the frames, pedals and wheels using a
couple of thick cable locks and a thinner tie cable. It's clearly more
difficult for the to shift six bikes all cabled together than one and
mostly a thief will want to be in and out quickly.
NB: I was told by a hire shop that bolt croppers capable of cutting
chain sizes greater than 22mm are difficult to find so using a chain or
lock with an cable of a larger size could be an option, I have a cheap
motorcycle lock of the roller tube type, very light but with a cable
size that stops it being cut with bolt croppers that I use sometimes
when out and about.

Previously mention:

on the hinges remove one screw at a time, drill through, replace with
a coach bolt (the ones with round heads). Do this to them all. Also
the lock shackle. I learnt this the hard way as the [censored] simply
unscrewed the door and did their dirty work!

You can also get a light steel frame door fitted on top of the wooden
one.

Sadly if the [censored] are determined enough they would just cut a hole
in the shed.

Thanks! this sort of stuff (and a few sturdy cables) should hopefully do the
trick.

Round here TBH I don't think there are that many professional bike thieves;
its mostly kids "hanging around" who might decide to burgle a shed out of
opportunism. Its also a suburban area with a slightly older population and a
lot of "stay-at-home" types who tend to call the plod out to *any* group of
kids seen hanging around and/or making excessive noise.

The cops did mention something though about how bicycle thieves had moved
out of Norfolk and Cambs because people were becoming more wary out there!

Infra red PIR light with alarm from your local DIY store.
Fitted INSIDE the shed, then if someone opens the shed door,
the light comes on. Startle factor! Plus the alarm in the house goes
'bing' very gently. Walking stick by the back door, in case someone
comes visiting.

Several individual shackles on the floor, one per bike.
One very long, large chain and padlock which goes round all the frames.

To remove a bike you only need to undo two locks, this level of security
is easily maintainable. The biggest problem with security is being
too tired to bother!
