cycling in Brazil

I guess stuff like how long will a trip like this take, can your brother
recommend
places to stay/see along the way, essential kit. My girlfriend is an
established tourer but this will be my first venture into the world of
distance cycling.We plan to go in January, is this a factor. Sorry if this
stuff seems naive bit having never cycled abroad I am keen for any useful
hints.

I was in Brazil earlier this year and travelled extensively by rental
car, though we did hire bikes in Rio. Please please please be careful
on your bikes.

As a driver I regularly had to veer onto to the hard shoulder to avoid
oncoming, overtaking vehicles on my side of the road. Problem is, the
hard shoulder is used by cyclists in both directions, pedestrians and
street vendors. You can imagine the slalom. My point is, keep a look
out all the time. Something like 70000 Brazillians are killed on the
roads each year; wrecked cars are often piled up at highway
checkpoints as a reminder, and you will see several accidents happen.
Most distressing one we saw was a kid on a horse get knocked over by a
truck at a roundabout. Kid jumped off in time but the horse was
killed.

Also, even the main freeways are sometimes badly potholed or washed
away, especially out of the main cities. Lesser roads can be a
nightmare, so again, watch our for swerving cars.

Expect Sao Paulo state to be hot and humid in the summer. Next to
no-one speaks English, so if you don't speak Portugese at least learn
to say "a-o gosteria jay uma sir vaysha poor favor" and you'll get by
:-)

Brazil is so cheap and and the people we met made us feel so welcome.
I think you'll have a great time but do be extra vigilant on the
bikes.
