Looks to me like there's a misunderstanding. The sections marked sand on
the parcours appear on the gmap as a series of linear paths. That is,
they're trails.

I think this is, at worst, packed sand, but definitely some sort of
trail-worthy surface. The "schelpenzand" presumably rides more like what
we would think of as a sand pit.

The only exception I can see is the "Zand" section right on the shore,
which might be a sandy beach.

It is, and the other sand sections are not very prominent in my
recollection. Also see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hOKCX_ZXas

Interesting. The sandy beach doesn't look that problematic, though that
may be world-class CXers making some pretty messy terrain look easy.

There were some weird places they were dismounting: two guys for that
little dip (1:39), presumably because it was too muddy at the bottom to
ride out, and at 3:27, dismounting for a tight turn on flat ground (!).
