Don't know the lass but I presume the ride you speak of is up the new
Norton Summit Rd, under all the maggie nests. The time trial was more to
get away from our feathered friends.
I believe that I rode so hard on that ride that the moment I stopped at
the pub on Norton Summit my tyre blew from heat and exhaustion. I wished
it had blown far earlier in the ride.

For the next time I go back to Adelaide how often do you do these
    informal "TT" ?
And possibly not in maggie season?

    Don't worry Michael, I won't make a habit of it :-)

You're mixing up the Old Freeway with Norton Summit. They're different
    climbs altogether.
Norton Summit is the most popular climb in Adelaide.

.... and if you are in Adelaide sometime [say for the Tour down Under], ask a
local like Gemma for directions to the relaxing alternative route up Coach
House Rd and Woodhill Drive, where they have to cut grooves the road surface
so the damn cars can get up it

Not a particularily long ride, but I can't remember a steeper road climb in
Australia - Dead Horse Gap on the Khancoban side of Thredbo and Bullli Pass
out of Wollongong have their moments but Adelaide's entry IMHO wins the knee
    destruction contest.

I ride with someone who lives on Ridgeland Ave, another rather steep
alternate route up there. I did that one with the beer (six-pack) handicap
    recently :-)

    Shame!

Although sometimes I have to confess to having a 25 on the back.

Have done Dead Horse Gap and it certainly is steep, and looong! But for pure
gradient on tarmac, there are some pinches that have been steeper. The
Castleburn climb on the Dargo Rd heading south (in Gippsland) is one, and
for a short but extreme pinch, Terrys Ave in Belgrave. The descent on this
road has you looking down on the roofs of the Belgrave shops as you approach
the roadabout at the bottom, all the while fully on the brakes!

Yes they certainly come in handy. Several kilometres of standing up in
bottom granny gear on Dead Horse Gap proved the usefullness of the triple.
With my new crankset the bottom gear is now 18". Yay for low gears.

    Cheers

18"? MTB gears on a 700c wheel, or 22/32 on a 26" wheel? My standard on
MTBs is 17", and it wouldn't be too hard to go down to 15" (and a bit) by
dropping to a 20 tooth granny. 11-34 clusters are the way to go,
especially if you're silly enough to ride a 17.5kg 5" duallie out of
Andos. On the Wentworth Falls side. Then again on the Woodford Side. And
    the steep bit twice.

(Actually that hill hurts no matter what, and that bike is *so* much fun
    on the descents).

Which reminds me, it might be time to try that hill on the SS again.

Don't like climbing those nasty hills in the nasty wind, sharing
the road with those nasty cars, worrying about those complicated
    gears and brakes, eh? :-)

Going round and round a little wooden fishbowl seems like such
a waste in Adelaide at this time of year. Maybe I'll try it next
    winter.

Cars? On Norton Summit? Where? I must have missed it.
Only lazy people have those nasty gears and the ability to freewheel :-P

Perhaps you should get out more, perhaps to Hanson or Edwardstown velodromes
perhaps, enjoy the sun, a cold bevvie and a bbq, and errrr, there's fixie
    bike riding in there somewhere!

BTW if you didn't already know, one of your own from your monday night
jaunts got wiped out big-time tuesday night by one of 'those nasty cars'...
so i think you'll be a man down for a while. Email me or Mr Dwyer for more
info if you don't know what happened to whom :-(

I've told yas before, but you and Random are just showoffs!

I wouldn't mind having a go, but the road is free, scenic and variable, so
    there's really no competition.

Yeah, I heard, although it's not someone I can put a face to at the moment.

Mt Walter in the Grampians, and of course, Baw Baw for sheer hell.
Norton Summit is a tootle. Even I can get up it using a 23, twice.

Crafers has much nastier bits, from memory ... some kickers there.

Via the new main road (I do it with a 21), that is, but some of the other
roads that can be used in alternate routes are much steeper. The old
main road is fairly steep near the summit, too.

Don't know of Mt Walter in the Gramps. Mt William perhaps?
