  1. Had a dog run out at me today while cycling. I braked, swerved and fell off
heavily. (I'm quite a big bloke - trying to get fit.) Cuts to my ankle, hip,
elbow and wrist. My leg hurts when I walk. My camera bag when flying -
scratched my camera. Bent me handle bars round.

The dog owner apologised and explained that she was training her dog to not
chase bicycles. "I s'pose Route 27 of the National Cycle Network is the best
place to do that", I said.

I just needed to tell someone. Do I get any sympathy?

I'd love to give you sympathy.

Are you a CTC/LCC member? You might get some sympathey there.

Did you get the owner's name and address?
Do you have any personal injury insurance?

Go to a medical facility where your injuries can be properly examined
    and documented.

Make a list of all the expenses you incur as a result of your encounter
    - clothes, camera, bike, time off work, taxi fares etc.

Try to claim off dog owner's insurance. Dogs are supposed to be kept
    under control by their owners.

    Get well soon!

Absolutely, I know that dogs can cause weird accidents. I'll never forget
sprinting away from a dog so hard that I broke my chain.

Sorry to hear about your fall. Good luck in claiming from the owner (if
you want to), and the dog if it comes to that :-)

Yes, lots. Dogs? I hate the little [censored]. And their owners are even worse.

This is not irrational hatred - experience has made me this way.

ITYM '[censored]', if Hampstead Heath is anything to go by.

The only cycling-related incident for which I attended a hospital, ever,
in 27 years of adult cycling, was when a dog bit me as I passed...

    Another dog-hater.

And Google isn't aware of a cyclist biting a motorist either, although it
appears that a motorist may have bitten a cyclist.

Yes. It always amuses me when a group expects tolerance and/or equal rights
for their viewpoint or activity but can't seem able to extend the same
    considerations to others.

As an ex dog owner I wouldn't want to be stereotyped with the owners who
don't clean up after their pets nor keep them under control any more than I
want to be classed as a Lycra lout because I cycle or a homicidal manic
    because I drive.

And Phil does get my sympathy, last summer a German Shepherd chased me from
a farm entrance when I was cycling on a public road, the first I new was
when I heard the owner bellowing after it. I stopped as the dog turned back,
do you think the owner apologised? Did he [censored]!
This is not the first time, by far, a dog has done this, I have little fear
of them and enjoy chasing them back from whence they came with their tails
'twixt their legs but if one gets me by surprise there is a real danger to
    me.
I have considered filling a bidon with amonia but would probably end up
    drinking it :-)

Many thanks for everyone's sympathy. No, I didn't think to get names,
addresses etc. I was a bit shaken and winded at the time. My right hip hurts
this morning though. Bit of groin strain and my hip is a bit swollen, but I
guess I'll live. Now, should I rest up today, or should I get back out on
the bike to try to relieve some of the stiffness? Blimey, I'm 45 and just
    had my first cycling injury!

In the area where the cycle route runs, there are several additional paths
through the woods for people who are on foot. These would be more suitable
for dog walking. I suppose it's easier and less muddy for pedestrians to use
    the cycle route.

A few weeks ago I was stopped by a woman walking with her two toddlers who
told me that bikes should be stopped from using the route. I tried to
explain about the National Cycle Network etc. but she would have none of it.
"These bikes are going too fast and are a danger to my children", was the
    reply.

BTW I am a motorist, cyclist, pedestrian and love dogs, in fact most
animals. Not too sure about children though ;-)

Out of the three modes of transport, I enjoy cycling the most. I get a
feeling of liberation and exhilaration when cycling which I don't get when
driving and I don't remember experiencing when cycling as a kid.

    I'll stop rambling now.

Highway Code rule 42 says somthing about needing to keep dogs on a lead on
    paths shared with cyclists.

SHORT lead - so those extending trip-wires don't count.

I'm sure it is, and do you know that if I changed the word "cyclists"
for "black people" it would be an incredibly racist comment, but I'm not
talking about black people or cyclists, I'm talking about dogs.

OK, maybe I was a bit harsh on dog owners - some of my best friends are
dog owners, to coin a phrase. But what possesses them to share their
house with a slavering smelly beast that pisses and [censored] and drops fur
    everywhere is beyond me.

Yeah, I know you have a point but not every dog is a viscious monster nor
does every owner allow thier dog to run wild and [censored] all over the place.
It's the general lack of tolerance that such a sweeping statement suggests
that makes me feel compelled to respond. Surely living on the crowded island
we do it ill behoves us to treat others with the broad brush condemnation we
find offensive when applied to us. (Oh and if you check your original post
you referred to owners as well as dogs)

You know what, I never knew that. I can just see myself stopping and
explaining that to all the owners who walk around Richmond Park and on the
    Thames path. 😉

I'll probably need to keep a copy of the highway code handy too. However, I
