Im sure everyone here is aware of what david blaine has been doing in london over the past 44 days - starving himself completely in a plastic box.
all the reports have mentioned that he may die if he eats solid food too quickly after being starved for so long, and will have to be on an intravenous drip at first.
my question is this - if he jumped straight out of his little box and scoffed down a hamburger straight away, what precisely could lead to him dying? i imagine the only thing that would happen is that he would be very happy for a few seconds before it all came back out the way it came back in....

One simple problem is that digestion requires energy and the production of digestive enzymes (protein). After not eating for 40 odd days his body doesn't have much in the way of spare resources to devote to this sudden new demand. Alternatively, his GI tract may have atrophied enough that the acid protection is poor (if indeed acid can stil be made) and his ability to absorb nutrients insufficent. If everything is working digestively, there's the problem that the pancreas may not be up to producing enough insulin, or the liver up to dealing with the sudden flood of nutrients.

I saw a brief shot of him coming out of his box and he looked to have a reasonable amouint of body fat still. Seemed strange, but then as someone pointed out, he IS a magician.
