When you look carefully at the category upgrade rules, it's evident that the only thing that differentiates Cat5 from Cat4 is experience in mass start races. You don't have to be good or fast to upgrade to Cat4, just persistent. You can finish dead last in 10 mass start races and you're upgraded to Cat4. The first upgrade that actually reflects skill or speed is Cat4 to Cat3. Even if you complete the 25 mass start races, you still need a top 10 finish in 10 of them. Of course, the regional administrator can bypass the points rules and issue an upgrade to a good rider at any time.johnnybrewer said:
