I've heard it claimed that some south-american city plagued with
illegal parking made it legal for police / parking wardens to let down
teh tyres of illegaly parked vehicles, and that this proved a much
more effective deterent than issuing fines, which many people seemed
to regard as part of teh cost of motoring. Does anyoen know, is it
complete myth?

trips and thus use far less petrol than someone else with a non-4x4 who
drives for every trivial errand'?

Speaking as a SUV driver, I'm wholly in favour of what these people are
doing. There's no reason to have a SUV[1] in an inner city area, and
there is no doubt that SUVs are more dangerous to other road users than
normal cars. It seems to me entirely reasonable that vehicles like mine
should be excluded from cities where they serve no purpose and increase
risk to others.

[1] By which I mean high ground clearance, rigid chassis vehicles ina
Disco/Range Rover/Shogun/Patrol/Frontera stylee, not 4wd sports or salon
cars.

Trouble is with the lard arses who drive lard rovers and lard-cruisers
around my area (peak district) is that they come out in convoys and
have wrecked miles and miles of beautiful green tracks and trails.
County council is now making many of them hard surfaces just because of
these brainless towny [censored] who shouldn't be allowed out in the country
and should be banned from town streets.

You forgot motorcyclists in your list, who are responsible for the majority
of the damage round here. There has been a noticable improvement in the
conditions of the local tracks where motor vehicles have been prohibited -
makes the MTBing much nicer.

Agreed. I went along Mastiles Lane on Monday on the MTB. After a year
with a motorised traffic ban it is way, way better than a few years ago.
Mostly grassed over now, leaving just a couple of winding narrow tracks.
Even the stony sections are bedding down and greening up now they're not
being ripped to shreds by MXer's.

Motorbikes not too damaging around here IMHO but could be wrong. Many
green lanes have been used by walkers, horse riders, cyclists and
farmers for years without any deterioration.
Lardrovers certainly are a major destructive influence without a
doubt, and it has been very obvious and fairly recent - last 3 or 4
years mostly. I've had personal confrontations with them and they
burble on about keeping rights of way open, civil rights etc but it's
really about a lardarse military/adventure fantasy.
The few times there has been snow in recent years the lardies all turn
out in their lardrovers looking for something stupid to do. You see
them driving around looking a bit glum - having lard brains means they
don't have much imagination poor things.
