Derailleur problem

    I've got a rear derailleur problem I can't fathom. I can set it so it index
    shifts happily and cleanly all the way from smallest cog to biggest - but
    then going back down from biggest to smallest the indexing is all over the
    place. Or I can set it so it's OK going from biggest to smallest, but then
    it's rubbish going back up the other way.

    By marking up the cable in each of the positions, I have confirmed that the
    cable is ending up in a different position by as much as 1-2mm when in what
    should be the same index position, depending on whether I've shifted up or
    down (I hope this makes some sense). The cable does not appear to be
    sticking and I've lubed it thoroughly. The derailleur itself (Shimano Nexave
    Megarange) is brand new. 8 speed cassette. The shifter is a Shimano Nexave
    rapid fire type. No evidence of excess chain wear.

    Does this mean the shifter is not working properly / broke?

    Grateful for any useful responses.

    Let's assume for the moment that the STI shifter itself is working properly.

    More things to check:

    - that the derailleur spring is consistently taut, i.e. that it is
    capable of maintaining tension on the cable regardless of gear used

    - that the cable really is sliding freely along all points between the
    shifter and the derailleur. If in doubt, make sure that all cable outer
    is properly cut at the ends (not mashed).

    About lubing cables and outers - I don't do it myself since I use Campag
    cables and outers - but be sure you're not adding too much resistance
    with too much viscous lubricant

    Get back to us with results and we'll go from there.

    Install new cable & housing. (And of course use high quality, cable &
    compression less housings.) Lubricate the pivot points of the shifter &
    derail, even though the derail is new, and it's probably not necessary,
    & try again. I'll wager it'll start indexing correctly.

    PS Also clean & lube any friction points the cable asses through, such
    as @ the bottom bracket.

    Thanks for the responses guys. I checked and the derailleur spring is indeed
    providing tension across the full range. The cable tends to go untaut on the
    biggest cog but I figure that's OK because the mech has just come up against
    the endstop, is all.

    I then had a brainwave and undid the cable and completely removed it from
    all the outers, and applying manual tension to the cable repeated my
    mark-up-the-cable-in-each-of the-index-positions where the cable exits the
    shifter. This has demonstrated that the shifter is shifting the cable (at
    the point of exit from the shifter) to near enough exactly the same position
    in each index position, regardless of whether shifting up or down.

    I therefore diagnose a problem with the cable sticking in the outers, and
    will replace them all (and the cable) and report back.

    Loosen the cable anchor bolt, hold the cable manually at the rear
    derailleur, and actuate the shifter one shift at a time. When you upshift,
    can you manually pull the cable through the derailleur cable stop with just
    your index finger and thumb? If not, something's sticking. Next, ensuring
    that the exposed portions of the cable is clean, pull the housing out of the
    cable stops. Slide the housing a couple of mm back and forth, trying to see
    how smooth it is. If it's gritty or hard to slide, lube or replace. If
    it's smooth on all cable housing runs, go to the shifter. Does the cable
    coming out of the shifter shift the same amount of cable in each direction?
    If not, the shifter or cable inside the shifter is the problem. If so, take
    it to the LBS 😉

    never mind). I know (because I've checked) that with the cable disattached
    from the derailleur and steady manual tension applied, the cable is getting
    pulled to pretty much exactly the same position in each index gear,
    regardless of whether shifting up or down. But then I attach the cable to
    the derailleur and set it up, and the problem persists. If I set it so it
    shifts sweetly going all the way from high to low, then it's about a whole
    gear out going back the other way. Or vice versa. Nothing has changed. The
    derailleur mech is brand new. Everything's lubed up with light oil. I've
    unscrewed both end stops all the way out so they're not getting hit up
    against and are not part of the equation at all.

    Help!!!!

    PS what's this adjuster screw right round the back of the mech that butts up
    against the frame - looks as if it might vary the tension in the spring that
    rotates the derailleur at the point where it engages the frame, sort of
    thing - and could this have anything to do with it? I've had a bit of a play
    with it (no idea what constitutes correct setting up of this setting) and it
    seems to make no difference.

    One more thing I can think of:
    Are you certain that the end of the cable is attached to the correct
    side of the "hold down screw" (for lack of a better term)? It's easy to
    get it on the wrong side. There's a 'V' groove where it's supposed to
    be. The 'V' groove is a little hard to see under the top plate.

    Hi again,

    If the LBS is charging you parts and labour to install new cable and
    outer, then the price should include the whole setup actually working,
    once they've done the repair. If the problem is in the cables, then they
    should bear the responsibility of an incorrectly done fix. If the
    problem is elsewhere, then they should have determined this before
    replacing the cable and outers, otherwise they are simply experimenting,
    using your time and money.

    Also check that there are proper ferrules installed on the cable outers
    (thin metal sockets covering the ends of the cables) which keeps the
    ends of the cable outers more rigid and less likely to grab on the cables.

    Another idea - look at how the cable runs under the bottom bracket,
    probably via a plastic guide. Make sure that there are no rough edges there.

    Finally, do a check by unscrewing the bolt with which the cable attaches
    to the derailleur, hold the end of the cable taut in your left hand
    (pulling towards the front of the bike), and shift upwards/downwards
    using your right hand. Confirm, this way, that there is no undue
    friction anywhere in the system. If the cable slides easily, test
    another shifter and see if the problem persists.

    BTW I don't believe that the cable will have been routed on the wrong
    side of the stop bolt, since you have already said that it shifts
    properly, going from small cogs to large cogs.

    Yes, the cable is attached on the correct side.

    Problem now solved. It was the chain. God knows what was wrong with it, I
    measured it and there wasn't any sign of wear at all (12 links = dead on six
    inches), it was a quality SRAM chain. But replacing it with a cheapy £7
    chain from Halfords (Halfords was all that was open and it was the only
    chain they had that was the right size and with 112 links, and I haven't got
    the kit to be removing links) has made the problem completely disappear!!
