  1. One week post-surgery and I'm [censored]. Temperature is in the mid-60's, sun is out, and ground is
dry. The only problem is I can't move my left arm more than two inches away from my body, dammit!
The best riding weather in weeks and I'm stuck at my home computer catching up on the [censored] I'm not
doing at work. Of course here at home I can do it in sweats with the MP3 player blaring in the
background. I could really get into the tele-commute thing..... 'course between golf and mountain
biking, I'd only work after dark or when it's raining.

Surgery went well with the one exception of the "hurt like hell" part the next day. Of course the
glory of modern pharmacology can do wonders to overcome such minor bumps in the road. I actually
backed off the narcotics earlier this week after experiencing a few brief episodes of detachment
from reality. It was fun for a day or two, but after that it was just a bit much. I'm not supposed
to use the arm much for anything, but I've managed to angle my arm and body in the chair to reach
the keyboard with both hands. Doc sez I gotta be in the sling for six weeks. I don't want to tear up
his wonderful repair work, but I can't see being an invalid for that long. The thought of gripping a
handlebar right now is pretty scary, but in another few weeks I'm gonna be climbing the walls! I go
back for my first follow-up on Tuesday. I'm planning to beg him to let me start physical therapy
just so I can feel like I'm making progress toward recovery.

....and I must admit the whole SS theme this week has been bizarre to follow in a drug-induced
state. Even Porter's video kept with the theme...hmmm what to make of it all. I did enjoy the "chain
slap" discussion though, but only after it turned into more of a "[censored] slap" than anything else.

Damn, I love this group. Thanks for all the kind words. Keep ridin'

Hang in there Tom, this will be a bad memory soon enough, don't rush it.

Get well soon, and yeah it sucks, but let it heal! I tried to get back on my bike too soon after I
bruised my rotator cuff last year and it took an extra month or two to heal. Play it safe, you'll be
    happy in the long run!

    heal up quick!

Was waiting to hear from you, Tom -- glad you didn't die on the table! 🙂

Sounds like you came thru it fine; have you heard yet what they found?

Seems to me I was supposed to start increasing range of motion almost immediately, albeit in VERY
small increments at first. Did they give you a pulley set to start moving that thing around?

I wore the sling out in public, mostly to let people know not to come yank my arm or something.
(Made doing yoga interesting; can you say "three-legged downward dog"?!?) Listen to your doc, of
course, but let him know you want to raise your hand again ASAP.

Outcome's still a bit early to tell yet, but it seems the specific sharp pain I'd grown accustomed
to these past few years is gone. Problem now is that it's sorta overcome by the general post-op
aftermath. What the hell....better living through chemicals. 🙂

He trimmed up the torn labrum cartilage, stapled down a torn biceps tendon, cleaned out a bunch of
loose pieces parts in the joint, and sanded off a bone spur. I figure with that list, he must have
fixed what was ailin' me. The only saving grace is that I'm sure the original injury was a bike
crash in the mid 90's (reminiscent of the 5mph thread below -- I remember it vividly)

No torture apparati have yet been issued for this round, still got the rubber tubes from the
previous non-surgical attempts to heal me. The doc wanted me to stay immobile for the first couple
of weeks. I've been trying to expand the range of motion a bit every day just to the point of pain,
but haven't tried anything overhead. Gonna wait for the go ahead before trying that.

Starting to get desperate for exercise. Went for a walk today..it felt pretty pathetic. I'm thinking
a short jog and/or the stationary bike will be in order next week. The real bike or the pool are
probably out for serious workouts for a bit.

...and trying to sleep blows. 🙁

    Tom

You could use the opportunity to make your legs huge 🙂

Go do some leg presses, extensions, hamstring curls, lunges, calf lifts, anything you can do without
having to use your arms for support. If you're careful you can probably do a bunch of ab stuff too.
It'll get ya buff, and at least you'll feel like you're doing something 🙂
