If you are patient it is possible to download 2km x 2km tiles of the latest OS 1:25,000 maps from
getamap.co.ukgetamap.co.ukOpen ↗. These can be assembled quite easily using something like MS Publisher,
and then even calibrated and used in something like OziExplorer.

The results are very good, so I am told. ;-

Yes you can purchase regional coverage of OS digital 1:50,000 (and soon
1:25,000) OS maps from

Oh yeah Paul. Well Harvey's maps are nicely coloured but they are useless for serious people who
want to navigate like men in the hills. And they are completely USELESS in whiteouts!

What happens when the batteries go flat?

Well, unlike a GPS, if you walk over the edge of a cliff holding a Harveys map, you can use it as a
parachute.

I had the presence of mind to drop my GPSRs, and empty my pockets of all the spare batteries as I
floated gently down to.......

Well, I don't really know where to, the GPS broke when it hit the ground.

This has been puzzling me. Do they mean 10 tiles total until you die?, 10 tiles per year? 10 tiles
in one connection session?

Naivety is in the eye of the beholder. It's a moot point whether OS has the inclination or
capability to chase down infringers of their copyright. [1] Considering the amount of copyright
infringement that already exists in the music, film and software industries, and the lack of
people going to jail, it may be worth considering the scale of the offence, if you forgive the
pun. Now if you were selling hundreds of copies of their digital maps at car boot sales, it might
be another matter.

[1] There are also many who believe very strongly that information such as map data, telephone
directories etc. should be in the public domain, as they are in some countries, and that the
that the cost to the end user should be the cost of producing material copies.

Anyway they've lost my future custom, although I may continue to download freebies - I bought my
first Harvey map yesterday and I like it more than the OS one. Nice and clear. It says it's
waterproof - does that really mean it can withstand a soaking, anyone?
