No, it's Chinese, and it says (roughly) to slow down because there
have been lots of accidents.(which translation is based as much on the picture as on my ability to
turn Chinese into English via Japanese...)James

In that case he won't be able to help! The thing that bothers me is that
it doesn't seem to be a prohibition sign... -

'Fraid we're all wrong. It says (top half) Slow down (bottom half)
Accident black spot". It isn't giving permission to decapitate people. My friend pointed out that in China signs are very different from those
used in the West. Prohibitions are displayed in words, not by symbols so
for instance "No Smoking" signs will say "No Smoking" and have a picture
of a lit cigarette to indicate what you shouldn't do (instead of a line
through a cigarette). Could be some quite interesting problems at the
Olympics if Westerners mistake prohibition signs for permission signs... -

I saw an interesting sign the other day. It was a normal round blue sign
for a segregated pedestrian/cycle path, except it had a bike and a horse
on it. No mention of space for pedestrians...It was on the trans pennine trail somewhere between Warrington and
Altrincham but I can't remember where exactly.peter
