Actually it was a lame excuse. They were 5th graders and most were

hope its just a temporary spike in the surge of hormones at that age.

    I guess I should've added... I gave my 4th grade teacher a nervous
breakdown. It took a couple of months and I had to recruit some friends in
the class. It was hard work, but well worth the effort.

    No offence taken.

But damn it hurt not having it today, had to WALK the damn trails to do some

exception of a Mtn Biker walking up a hill PUSHING his bike - That's the
    ultimate in pitiful)

    I made my teacher QUIT ! ! ! And I was the ultimate goody-goody.

But in mid-primary-school, about year 4 or 5, my dreams came true, I got the
teacher who had been the sweetest, most highly desired teacher in the
    school.
However she'd gotten married during the end of year break, and something
changed, whether she was being beaten by her hubby or what, but she came to
school each day with a major attitude, and became the teacher-from-hell.

We had a rule that we marked each others spelling, and if you mis-marked
someone, or got an error of your own, then you wrote the word 100 times.
I had 6 errors in total, so 600 words. I wrote them out, and brought them
the next day. But TTFH (The Teacher From Hell) was away, so I gave them to
the relief teacher who filled in for her.
Next day, TTFH returns and wants my words. I tell her I'd handed them in,
she doesn't believe me, and makes it 200 of each word, or 1200 words. I
refused, after all I'd done them. Next day, 2400 words, next day 4800 words.
This went on for the whole week, when we were into 5 figures, my Mum found
out and she got involved (the only time I ever remember my Mum ever getting
involved in almost anything at my school).
The teacher my Mum, and the Principal all meet, and the Principal decides to
    drop it to 400 words.
My Mum tells me I'm not doing even 400, and thankfully she was a
professional typesetter, so using one of the earliest computerised IBM
typesetting machines (this was the early 70's), printed out 404 of the
words (the extra 4 were because of the column format she'd used) and sent
them in to the school with me. Teacher hit the roof, and the next day we
came in to find a new teacher, ours had quit unexpectedly. I became a hero
with the rest of the class who all week had earnestly been watching with
interest the number written in the top corner of the board that was keeping
tally of how many words I was due to bring in, as they believed I had freed
them from the tyranny of TTFH.
Now to keep this OT, I suppose I'd better add that I rode my bike to school
each day, but then again, Mtn Bikes didn't exist, so we just beat the hell
out of whatever we had - From memory an "Apollo" or "Malvern Star" with a
grand total of TEN GEARS! ! ! !

If you're not racing then I'd have to say that spending money on lockout is
pointless. If you're not competing then what difference does saving a few
seconds on a climb make? But, if you just think lockout is a slick feature
    then that's different story.

Not necessarily true. On a long climb locking out the shocks saves a hell
of a lot of wasted energy than when you're bobbing up and down w/o lock-out.
The bike I have has both front and rear lock-out and I use them both simply
because I get less exhausted over the same period of time when not locking
out. Poor design? Maybe but the bike I have is still rated near the top
of the fs list....Titus SB. Improper set-up? Another maybe. I reduced the
rear travel to it's minimum and keep pressure up in the shocks to minimize
bounce. I can't afford the steady platform shocks that are available (that
weren't available 3 years ago) so not an option at this time. I've tried
probably every adjustment possible. Except for going full ridgid <(;-}.

It *feels* better when climbing out of the saddle....not that I use it all that
much BC I'm forever forgetting to reset it at the crest of the hill....but I do
    appreciate it as a non-racer.

If you ever throw a pair of high pressure slicks on your MTB and use

If your current shock is a FOx then you can have it rebuilt by Push
Industries. For $140 they will rebuild it and add a propedal like function.
*I believe* I have read that here or on a forum somewhere. $140 is not much
for a new shock with stable platform.

Ya don't need no stinking lockout when the shock/fork works right.
I have a Manitou firefly SPV in front and a Fox AVA propedal coil in
the back, and I can stand and hammer and I lose nothing in full
    travel mode on both.

Maybe that's what's breaking all your frames ;-)

    Flex and Boing, Baby...

I didn't think anyone was counting, LOL!

  17. Quoted message said:

I am pretty loyal to my LBS, especially as it was their generous valuation
of my previous bike, that got the insurance payout that is paying 1/3rd of
this bike, so I feel inclined to stick by them.
They sell only Giant and Merida in the serious bike range.
For the same $3K, I just couldn't get as good a Giant as I could Merida.
    So I went the Merida.

If I went to other bike shops, I'd probably get more range, but I really
like the frame on the Meridas.
Have you ever seen one? If you cut a cross section out of one, i.e. took a
peice of tube and sliced it like baloney, you'd find the tube is heart
shaped, and in the top two loops of the heart is a "double-barrel-shotgun"
reinforcing tube. So you end up with and alloy tube outer, with twin
    reinforcing alloy tube inners.
I'm no structural engineer, but that seems to me to be a way to make a
pretty damn strong frame. It does add weight, it must, but this bike still
comes in at something like 9kgs. So WAAAAAYYYYY lighter than anything I've
ever ridden, but should still be stronger than I can manage to break.
    That's why I went Merida.
