  1. do you use the lockout on your fork or shock?

i have but must tell that it is a pita. i dont bother with it but maybe i
    should

just curious to know what others do, needing a new shock and deciding if the
extra $ for lockout would be worth it

Depends on the hill. If it's short I just do it. If its longer I lock it
    out.

What he said. My problem is I forget to unlock it. Riding with active rear
suspension and a locked out front really messes with your head : Man I'm
    riding like a dork today....

The first time I get out of the saddle I lock out the fork. No rear
lockout on mine. I've surprised myelf that I almost always remember to
unlock the fork at the top.

  5. No lockout on mine, front or back, but that's OK coz there's no suspension
    there, either.
i.e. - my take is that it is vital to be able to lock the bloody things up
tight. And leave them that way ;-)

The last time I locked it, I forgot and rode Psycho Betty (read:
babyhead city) for two and a half miles before someone told me. Funny
thing is, I didn't think it was all that bad. Now, I just don't bother.
Heck, the Romic on my Id bobs so much I've learned to use it like one
of those bouncing balls you sit on from the late 60's.

You speak the truth Penny. I ALWAYS forget to unlock it until something
happens to make me remember. I think they should put a light on them or some
    kind of idiot beeper!!

I don't have a lockout per se, but I do use my ETA all the time for
climbing. It makes a big difference, but when you forget to extend it back,
it sucks for downhill (going over the bars). I also have a TALAS shock in
the rear, so you pop the fork up and lower the rear, and you have different
    geometry again.

Nice to have but not essential, IMO. If I had to choose, REAR lockout seems
more useful than front to me.

I have a mysterious /drag/ happen with my Marathon SL's lockout, so I hardly
ever use it any more. (I've checked numerous times, and it's NOT brake-pad
rub. The pads' orientation does change a bit with different settings, so
they're not centered to start with in order to compensate.)

Best guess I come up with is some sort of bearing pressure when fork is
compressed and locked out, but no clue why that would be. (Need to try a
different front wheel to start eliminating stuff.)

    What was the question???

    Yeah, on my rigid bikes.

climb, it is not a good design" - Chris Cocalis

The ETA works in only one leg. Therefore, your body weight probably skews
the wheel in the fork. A 150lb friend of mine has this problem on his 2000
Z1, but it's got the [censored] beat out of it.

How many people does it take to change a light bulb?

I've got a Psylo with the remote lockout on the bars, and yeah, I do use
it a fair bit. If it didn't have the remote on the bars I'm sure that I
wouldn't use it as much. Makes a subtle but noticable difference on the
road, and very useful for the climbs. I seem to remember to unlock it
about 90% of the time, and even if I only remember the first time I hit
a bump on the way down it's easy to punch the release button without
    stacking it.

Yes....Marzocchi ETA - not total lockout, but makes the fork an inch shorter and
    less squishey.

I use it when I'm out of the saddle, sort of lurching up a hill. Seems to me
    like it makes a diff.

OTOH, it also seems like there's a distinct sense of relief when I switch back
to normal mode when on a level surface. I can't imagine how the bike can be
harder to pedal on the level with the thing partially squished - but that
    sensatin is definately there.

OTOH, I'm one of those people who feels like their car runs better after it's
    been washed.

    SPV baby!!!

Ya don't need no stinking lockout when the shock/fork works right.
I have a Manitou firefly SPV in front and a Fox AVA propedal coil in the
back, and I can stand and hammer and I lose nothing in full travel mode
    on both.

Maybe that's what's breaking all your frames ;-)

Apparently the lockout on the 2005 Merida Matts Pro is controlled from the
handlebar with a button (or lever or switch).
That would certainly make it a whole lot more useable.
I doubt I'd use it much if it meant reaching down to the top of the tube
while belting down the trail at 60Km/h

Not usable if it doesn't show up.

That's where old roadie training - reaching for a water bottle - come in
    handy.
