It did really take my breath away! I left not long afterwards.

The problem is that getting to a decent shop involves a 3 hour round
trip for me, so I keep going back to the local shop in the hope that I
might find something interesting one day.

After the exchange described above I asked whether they had anyone
trained to help fit boots carefully. The assistant told me she could
measure my foot, if I thought that would help. At that stage I left...

Possible...
It should be noted that certainly Blacks and Halfords are not all
created equal, and you can't just assume all their folk will be
numpties. The manager of the Dundee Blacks strikes me as knowing as
what he's talking about, and Halfords, especially the "Bike Huts" have
some very good cycle mechanics in their employ. They /don't/ have a
perfect record in that respect, though!

I try to be a good example to my children, but they just see me
as a dire warning.

I recently had what I considered a good reason (God knows what!) to call at
Blacks in Leicester. The guy wearing a name tag (so he didn't forget who he
was I think) 'Rob' and 'Manager' said to me "I don't know much about this
stuff," sweeping his arms to encompass the entire contents of 'his' shop.
And I'd only asked him where his Silva Compasses where stored. There were a
number of raised eyebrows in the shop - mine and most of his staff!.
Needless to say I went elsewhere for my compass.
Having experienced Dixons, Currys, and Halfords I reckon they are all part
of the PC World empire which must be wholey owned by Blacks.
Maybe I just expect too much of people whose salary I contrubute to.

If I do buy a down sleeping bag in the near future (as it is on my

I went in there a few weeks ago and spent ages chatting with one of
the blokes who works there. I didn't spend any money at all but he
seemed to enjoy talking about the kit and seemed to have experience of
using some of it. He made me think that he knew what he was talking
about. I bet he leaves soon.

I recall a conversation in Lockwoods, after going home and fetching a pair
of Meindl Mountain Crack boots which needed a little remedial action.

Aussie Assistant #1 "John, this gentleman would like his cracks
stretched......"

Entire shop looks askance at me while I make some comment about Aussies and
their lack of tact, slang and their especially loud voices.

That's what you want - a good local shop staffed by enthusiasts that are
happy to spend the time discussing products, even if it means talking
themselves out of a sale. I've been using escape2 in Warwick for a
couple of years now and (excuse the plug for them) wouldn't go anywhere
else. Especially as they will price match other shops :-)
