Sounds to me like you got the shaft! But what else would you expect with a

If you ride it and have fun, you got a screamin' deal. ($200 for a nice
hardtail is a bargain, assuming it fits of course.)

Ride the bike. Get it dirty. Spend money on it. Repeat as needed.
