Drapac Porsche Cycling Team & Tour Downunder

It is suggested Drapac-Porsche as Australia's recently announced non-AIS UCI Continental Pro team with new coach Scott McGrory which will ride in Europe in 07 has been denied team entry into the Tour Down Under on the lobbying by Cycling Australia and AIS.( announcement by D-P in Cycling news here- http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2006/dec06/dec08news2 ) The feedback is along the line that AIS (and the States IS's ) & CA see Drapac-Porsche now holding a UCI Continental Lic. is going to take emphasis and possible income from the elite programme the IS's have in place for riders especially those wanting to head to Europe and therefore it (AIS) is being obstructive. In respect to AIS teams, there is South Australia-SAAIS and now also FRF Couriers-NSWIS today was announced as another licensed continental pro team by the UCI. ( http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2006/dec06/dec20news2 ) Do the AIS's have a monopoly on cycling development programmes for Australian riders seeking a pro career? According to Cycling news D-P have outlined a programme for their riders that balances education, career development and athletic development of elite potential which can lead not only to a pro career but a successful life after cycling. Much to be said for this, it is irksome that many riders in the current and recent AIS/IS programmes have erred in their off bike activities fuelling a media frenzy at times and some past riders are quite lost after they have retired and had social problems and career problems. I would hope the AIS/AIS's/CA are not doing what has been suggested. A solid community and industry supported business/industry sponsored programme can have far reaching effects certainly will give more riders choices in considering their own opportunity to further a promising pro career without having to enagage in AIS politics, controversies and closed doors. On another note the Tour Down Under has some great teams announced already, ( http://www.tourdownunder.com.au/node/20 ) but this is a rare chance missed for a commercial team that will be riding in Europe in 07 to show their mettle and obtain valuable experience here in Australia against some of the elite Pro-Tour teams and Continental pro teams they will face in Europe. It is also worth noting they would have gone up against the Australia-UniSA team that Dave Sanders is managing who happens to be head coach at AIS. Doesnt look too good from a distance. Anyone know any more fill us in.

Seriously tho' - lobbying to keep other teams out?? If its true, then
its just sad, and I won't support the offending teams if that is the
case....

Whether it's true or not doesn't take anything away from the efforts of
the riders in other teams or their deserving (or otherwise) of your
support. There may be dirty politics going on, there may not be, but
either way, the lads riding for SA.com aren't responsible for it.

The lads in all the teams deserve our support, admiration and cheers... and if we can do it ... directing some financial support to their sponsers by buying product or watching the races on site when we can wouldnt go astray...

As a taxpayer, I think it would be great if we didn't "need" the AIS
any more. Every gold medal costs approaching the weight of the winner
in real gold.

Savings & Loans not allowed in the TDU either... The two top Australian teams are unable to compete in the biggest stage race in their own country... yeah, good one, way to promote the sport!

They'd be Victorian teams? Two SA teams are in, and perhaps that's fair
enough? It's payback for pinching the F1 Grand Prix, oh and I guess
knocking off all the best footy players for the VFL, and there was
probably a bit of gold robbery before that. ;-)
