Drinks from spectators.

It has allegedly happened before. Maybe not with a banned substance but with something to make the rider ill.

I'm sure it is only a matter of time before all of the crows are barriered away from the riders, and the nabbing of a drink from a spectator will incur penalties as well as a stiff security check up :eek:

Been away for a while and when I come back the website has undergone a total tarting up - very nice 😎

And reports of spitting at Amrstrong during the mountain time trial I
found really depressing.

Guess I'm still dealing with loss of innocence or something.

Ob point: this newsgroup is not a website. I have no relationship at
all with cyclingforums.com and if there were any way to avoid them
using my posts and pretending I wrote them for their website, I would.

Indeed. This used to rankle, however, last year I registered with the
forums. Whether it seems me posting in here as my user ID in the forums
I've no idea, but I'm one and the same there too.

Some useful info on some of the boards sometimes, and I can see the
reasoning behind grouping usenet forums into the site to provide a 'one
stop' service, but yes, I'm not in the habit of providing site content
unless I make a conscious decision to, normally :-)

It's the first time I've seen it happen, and I commented to DW at the
time on how unusual it was. I remember hearing or reading somewhere a
while ago that the riders won't tend to drink water handed to them by
spectators because they don't know what's in it. Apart from the
possibility of spiking, apparently it's not unknown for spectators to
just go and fill a bottle from the nearest stream.

And what with some of the sickos in society even pouring liquids over
themselves is an act of trust. Nice that they can still have that trust
though and let's hope it's never abused.

last 8k of climbs is barriered, imagine 200k!

On every km of every stage ?. Not necessary. There are plenty of times when
there are less than 1 person per 5m on most stages of the Tour. On the Tour
of Flanders on the bergs, they simply use a rope behind which spectaters
stand. It works fine. The roads are much narrower than Alpine and Pyrenean
cols.

Alpe d'Huez is the only real place with a problem, it has its reputation and
everyone wants to see the tour there. This is not a new problem either,
Fabio Parra was impeded 15 years ago by the crowds. It wouldn't surprise me
to see it omitted for the next few years and use other places such as
Sestriere or Les Deux Alpes. All depends who bids the most and if ASO put
money before safety.

Still, as they barriered almost half the climb it shouldn't have been
too hard to block off the other half. Admittedly, it wouldn't be so
easy a prospect had the Alpe come at the end of a road stage.

My one trip up to Huez was inside a coach - far easier.
