I know all you anti-triathletes will love this story.
I was in a duathlon yesterday along Yarra Boulevarde. The bike leg was a 5km loop x 4 laps, but it had to be shortened by nearly 1km because of a crash. Somebody had crashed into a wire mesh fence and they had the roads blocked for the ambo's. The bizarre thing of course, is that the crash occurred during the run leg! Yes, it's true - triathletes/duathletes are so bad in packs that they even crash into fences in the run leg!

Or, the poor bloke collapsed and was cut up so badly in the process that he required the ambos?
That said, some parts of the bike leg looked like Brown's Cows coming home at night... the TO must have been hoarse by the end of it...

I can't imagine it being a collapse 2kms in. Given how narrow the path was at that point I think it's more likely legs and arms got tangled (which nearly happened to me thanks to some loser who took things a little too seriously at the back of the pack).

ick, crashes in any form are nasty - mesh and flesh do not mix.
This also explains the BR no-show yesterday.. I waited till 7:26am and took off solo.. anyone else rock up later? Was a nice tempo ride, except for the wheel sukka I had to shake back into Hurstbridge..
I caught and passed him, then a few 100m I turn around to see him huffing and puffing on my wheel... so I attacked.. I'd have happily pulled him along if he survived the mauling, but he was goooooone. I totally blew up on the next short hill, but had enough gap to recover and keep the power down 🙂 If he is reading this... nothing personal dude, just using wheel sukkas for interval motivation..

DaveB[/QUOTE]Perhaps you may find it difficult to imagine, but the guy actually suffered a heart attack during the run leg, collapsed and was kept alive by 3 fellow competitors performing CPR until the ambulance arrived. The cycle leg was shortened to allow the ambulance safe access to the course. Rather than ridicule the sitution, perhaps it is more appropriate to praise the competitors and officials for their actions that kept the guy alive and provided a safe path for the ambulance to reach him.
Perhaps there was more than one "loser" at the back of the pack.....

meeeeeeeeeeeeeeoooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.....
In Dave's defence, how can he 'praise' when he was clearly unaware of the actual seriousness of the situation? No need to start throwing barbs, it’s the last thing we need around these parts.

If "Dave" was unaware of the true situation he should have said nothing at all. In his original posting (which you edited out) he states that;

"Dave" was the one that was too quick to throw barbs.
"Us and them" postings of this newsgroup are out of control, it's always roadies this or triathletes that, four wheel drivers, cars, trams, hoons, government. 90% of postings full of angst directed at anyone and everyone. Chill out chaps!

It's about exceptions and rules.
He assumed it was all about idiots and losers, that being the default.
Instead of the default being that good people do these races and it wouldn't have been interrupted so without good reason.
Bit like the Brock thing really - the original rechead comment was really the default a,b position about car drivers, it just happened that this particular one didn't fit the default.

Yes I made a mistake, and certainly sorry about that. With the a family with a history of early heart attacks I definitely don't like to see something like that in a race. But if not knowing the full story is grounds for saying nothing at all, usenet is about to get very quiet.

Ho ho - no show? No! Ess and I turned up just before 0730h. We must have just missed you. Ess had raced the previous day but still blew me away up to Kangaroo Ground...

We don't hate all triathletes. We like you and ritcho, for example. We even like some runners. Like Tamyka. Although imagine if she didn't waste her time running 160kms -- she'd be able to ride 1000kms in 24 hours.

He did that to me too once. Left a minute before I got there, a couple of minutes before 0730. But the red lights conspired against him.
See people, running red lights can be a good thing. It stops wheel suckers like me from being able to latch on 🙂

"and now for something completely different..." (and rather irrelevant)
How come funruns and duathlons can get permits to hold events on Kew Boulie and our club can't? Should we incorporate a Le Mans start to the intended races there so as to appease the 'on foot' component???
PS buggerage about the poor sod in the Duathlon. I doubt if i could remember enough of long gone CPR training to do what they did...

Fun run (I assume you mean DeCastella Run) was on Kew Boulie but only had road access for the first 2km and after that it was on the path. Two years ago it was full road access, and last year was same as this year. So they are only get road closure for the start of the run where they really need it. Whereas the HCC ITT would have needed full road access for the whole course I assume.
The duathlon was on Yarra Boulevarde, and blocks off about 2.5 km (for a 5km loop) so I'm assuming a relatively short distance and not that much traffic inconvenienced gets them over the line.
Besides everybody knows roadies are a bunch of law breaking lycra louts 😉.
And are we ever likely to see you out on a Sunday again??
