Well clamp on is what it says, there is a clamp that goes around your seat tube. Braze on is a bit of a misnomer. It actually is just a derailer, no clamp and it bolts on to either mounts on the seat tube or an adapter which is a clamp. Often times a braze on is used with an adapter clamp for oversized seat tubes that are larger than 1.25 inches.

Clamp-on mounts the FD by means of a clamp that goes around the seat tube.

The braze-on FD is attached directly to a mount on the frame that may be either brazed, welded, or otherwise permanently mounted.

The term braze-on dates to the days when frames were made of steel and joined together by brazing. (Heating up a bonding metal such as brass in a method similar to soldering.) Do a quick google on brazing.

A braze on has a section "brazed" onto the seat tube on which the cerailleur is bolted. A clamp-on had a band attached to the derailleur which wraps around the seat tube to hold the derailleur in place.

I recently learned what a betina (sp?) was, so why not another metalworking term? All kidding aside, Thank you for the info.
