Shimano has solved the 'we're not going to pay licencefees' problem neatly by not offering a headset
with the 10-speed group. If you've seen Shimano Aheads, it was achieved with an -probably illegal-
aftermarket toprace.

I've changed a couple of Shimano threaded headsets into 1" threadless headsets by putting an
expanding reamer through the top cup to remove the threading until the cup is an exact fit on
the steerer.

I believe Shimano refuse to pay license fees to Dia-Compe or whoever it is and so don't offer any
threadless headsets. Seems to be more or less shooting themselves in the foot to me.

That is a very simple yet very good idea. Do you think the headset would hold together if the
hexagon (nut) that accepts the headset wrench were shaved off??

When you turn it into threadless you throw the nut away. The stem holds everything together.

Yes, I know what you mean but I was referring to the sort of 'integrated' nut that is part of the
upper cone housing. It's the piece that tightens against the lock nut.

Have you or have you seen anyone else shave this off to lower stack height? Does it compromise the
headset in anyway? If this can come off then it will be comparable to a real threadless headset.
