I only got replies on my Soy thread. Hoping to get some feedback/opinions on these EFA questions so re-posting combined + more ?'s.... THANKS!
1) Are there any (alleged) benefits to taking Omega 3 short chain EFA's (the kind in plant/flax oil.) I understand that a small amount of these can convert to EPA and DHA and that these are the reasons why we want O3's but that fish oils (long chain) are a much better source. Ie. why not just take fish oils instead?
2) Why do makers of 3:6:9 blends support the claim that we should strive for a better ratio of 3:6's but purposely add more 6's to these blends when supposedly a big problem is that we already get too much 6 in our western diets. I understand that if you depended solely on these blends for your EFA's then they would have a great ratio but that is unlikely. So basically why are they offering us more 6's/promoting these blends (ie. UDO's)
3) How can you tell if fish oil caps contain rancid oil? I'm confused because some people say that a fish smell is normal and some say that means = rancid. Which is it and how can you best tell?

I think you are right. Moreover, since you mentioned Udo, I took a look at http://www.udoerasmus.com/articles/udo/fish_oil.htm and now I have suspicions that these writings (with so disarming logical errors) were sponsored by the evil industry that is producing those "damaged, fishy fish oil pills". By the time God was mentioned in the Genetic Variation section, I was ready to throw up a spherical chiken.
LOL what's with you nuts in this group? Thanks for the link (everything after that is causing me to scratch my head.)
What errors are you finding in his claims? Biggest thing I see there is a possible conclusion that men don't convert short chain n3's to DHA possibly due to lack of estrogen. Any further thoughts?
Do you take fish oil sups?

There are many brands of EFA supplements available now. I took Udo's capsules for years, now I tend to take whatever they sell at Whole Foods.

I've seen people meticulously rearranging top-posting to make it readable, but to reverse everything bottom to top takes the top-posting to hole nothe leval - way to go b00t! How did you master that mixing of glimpses of critical thinking with naive questions? Are you a troll? (a funny question to ask, what a troll would reply?). Love, DZ

Sorry man but what happened is in your reply you for some reason ommited my 3rd question regarding detecting rancidity. In my quest for knowledge I came accross Krill Oil. No I'm not a troll. I'm also not a complete newbie. When I was last here there were lots of posts (now I can't see any) from Lyle and also Patrick (although the two don't belong in the same sentance.) Anyway thanks for your input, I'm hoping for more.

Further to last post. I think I am going to not bother with UDO's and just consume flax oil and maybe flax seeds also. I plan on also taking fish oil caps BUT I am really sceptical about the industry and I hate the thought that I could be ingesting rancid oil.....

Decent fish oil has an expiration date. If it doesn't have an expiration date, or if you see that it's close to the expiration date, don't buy it.
Was that so difficult?
BTW, if you're so worried about rancid fish oil, why aren't you worried about the cyanide content in flax seeds?

Or flax seed oil going rancid? BTW, there are studies that looked at the concentrations of long chain EFA in people supplementing with short chain plant derived precursors. They found that these concentrations level off and therefore the claim that if you could just take more ALA to increase DHA is incorrect. I'm not going to speculate if the author of the pages "did his homework" (like Steve F. said), or if he did why that is not mentioned.
Obviously there are many things we can't make that are either essential, or beneficial when taken in doses larger than what would come from common types of food.
It is plain silly to make the comparison to vegetarian animals like rabbits and horses and say that if they could do the elongation effectively, we must as well. The website is full of such nonsense.

Much of the general discussion regarding vegetable vs. animal sources of nutrients is driven by a strong vegan/vegetarian agenda and has nothing to do with the actual quality of the products or their physiological effects. Some of it may be true, but it seems that much more is [censored], perpetuated by a strong bias against consuming animal products.
I don't mind if some people believe that consumption of animal products contravenes their moral values, but I hate it when they try to recruit others with junk science and unwarranted hysteria.
