Let me start out by saying, the last bike I built was in the late 80's. It is a Schwinn Ontare, with Suntour drive train, Scott Mathhauser Super Brakes and a Modolo stem and bar.
I have been out of cycling for a while. I am 47 and am in dire need to get back on my bikes. With exception of an annual MS 150 I do with my daughters. For that I ride a Double Vision recumbent tandem. It was the easiest way to find something to fit both daughters and myself.
I recently found what I thought was a great deal on a Merlin frame and carbon fork on E-bay. Now I am in a position to start building my next bike. My schwinn has a 7 speed freewheel, and always seemed to be enough gears. I know, some people say a single speed is the way to go.
My question is this, what is the concensus on 9 versus 10 speed. Is the extra gear worth the extra cost?
What about Dura-ace 9 speed versus Ultegra 10 speed.
Basically I am after the most bang for the buck. I also don't want to build an obsolete bike. Ever tried finding brake hoods for Scott/Modolo brake levers? Last ones I found were pink and they are worn out.
Not to mention chain rings for the crank.
I know this is like asking whether Shimano is better than Campy, everyone has an opinion. That is what I am looking for, your opinions. Hopefully people here are friendlier than some some of the Motorcycling Forums I frequent(ie. ADVRider.com)
Thanks in advance for your help.
