Etrex Vista from the USA

As I understand it, there are two versions of most mapping Garmin GPS units - a 'North America'
version and a 'Rest of the World' version. The difference is that the American version has a more
detailed built-in 'basemap' of the USA and Canada, at the expense of a far less detailed map of the
rest of the world. The rest-of-world version has a better international basemap.

I don't know whether the Etrex series can have the USA basemap replaced by the international one.

The advice about the basemap is correct. It's not something you can change yourself either.

The good news is that Garmin Europe will honour the warranty as long as you have a receipt.

Doubt it as the previous poster said they're built in. Try the company who make them, give 'em

Not possible to change the basemap. There have been several threads on this subject in
'alt.satellite.gps' recently.

if you get the UK roads and recreation or worldmap, etc they wipe out the USA base map when you
download sections from them. So as soon as I loaded in the Scottish Sub maps - [censored] - no more US
base map. no problem though, you can get it from the garmin web site and re load it as and when. In
other words, if you get the UK road and rec, then its all the same pretty quickly!

When I brought mine back and loaded UK R & R, it didn't wipe out all the US base map! I can still
pan all over the world and get outline maps. For the US, all the main highways seem to be there, at
least the inter- states.

The US Metro-guide which I purchased there was wiped out by R & R, but I have the CDs here, as well
as installed on SIL's Laptop in California. If we go again I just upload from there into the Vista.

Similar question regarding a Geko - does a US-supplied model support all the expected UK (i.e. OS)
grid formats? Prices in US are very attractive at the moment due to the dollar/pound exchange rate.
Even allowing for duty and tax, I reckon to pick up a Geko 301 for around £150. Don't want to do
this if there are compatability problems tho .

visit alt.satellite.gps and look at the "Re: Using Garmin 2610 (US Version) with European City
Select V5?" thread. There do seem to be a few problems.

These are all problems which afflict mapping units (European models have different base maps
than US, and sometimes different sized areas allocated for maps). The Gekos are non-mapping
units. No problems. UK OS grid fully supported, but will probably have to be manually set by
purchaser from options.
