I have always been a person that has exercised, and in the
past month or so have uped it to 6 days a week, they are 1
hour to 1 and half hours of work outs, cardio and on the
long days cardio and weights. I did this to kick start my
losing strike again. I had made lifetime but my personal
goal was still 10 more pounds, it has worked good lost 5 of
those pounds, my problem is that I have rhuematoid arthritis
and low back problems and it was stupid of me to do this
much exercise now I have a bad back flare up and my feet
hurt so much I can hardly walk, but I know if I don't
exercise and eat the same point range I will gain, I was
eating at the low point range when exercising also. I
probalby have sabatoged myself, are there people out there
that don't exercise and don't have that much to lose or who
are mainting without doing exercise. I have been told to do
nothing for about 2 weeks and then can only shot for 3 to 4
days of light exercise. I am really ina panic because of
weigh gain possibliites? Any suggestions> Thanks Becky

Hi, Becky, I exercise almost every day but not the way you
do. I think you can still maintain your weight without this
amount. It can not be good for you if it hurts you. I do
some cardio but mostly, I walk. I would encourage you not to
depend on the exercise to keep the weight off. Try not to
obsess about it. Follow your doctor's advice. Find ways to
relax, listen to music, read a book, watch a movie take a
long bubble bath. You have lost a lot of weight. It will not
come back overnight. You need to banish your critic.

Becky,
Try Yoga for toning, it really helps strengthen the muscles
that support the back, so it may help with your back
problems. Plus, it's a great toner, I did weights for years
and never achieved the toned look in my arms like I have
with Yoga. You really don't stress your feet (except for
standing positions, which are for the most part pretty
gentle on the feet) and you can modify all positions if they
become painful. the best thing is that it is so relaxing. As
for cardio, can you swim? I have been running for a year and
a half (six miles, four times a week) and tried swimming a
few laps on Sunday and it kicked my butt cardio-wise, I
could barely catch my breath after 10 laps of freestyle, but
had no sore knees, or feet like I do when I run.The most important thing is to feel better and take care of
yourself, I think these exercises may help!Meg M

Hi Becky, I also have RA in multiple joints and I am
relatively young.. 43.First off don't panic, and use your meds conservatively for
the inflammation you may have sparked. My RD told me: no incline on the treadmills, no stepping or
kicking (as in tae-bo or step classes) you can do lighter
weights with more reps..but don't stress your joints with
too much weight (so much that you wobble when tired) Think
longer, not harder exercise.I can't run for an hour like I used to, but I can walk VERY
fast 4-5mph. and it burns almost the same calories.I find that if I take every other day off my feet are
less likely to hurt.(aaaargh, BOTH feet) RA sucks, but
what to do??MY RD also suggested indoor cycling or spinning-so I bought
a bike...it's being shipped.(I can't wait!!)Let us know how you fare during recovery!! teresa
