  1. not hanging around here much lately, as time does not really permit, and
though i've been continuing to run for the most part, i've been
suffering from a sore hip/piriformis and sometimes little flare-ups of
the ITB. the ITB isn't much of an issue now but the hip is.

doing the icing, stretching, resting, reducing mileage, some physio-type
therapy, etc, but still going through all of this. rather discouraging.

there are days when i just say the hell with running and go for a nice
long, easy on the body SWIM instead. the cool (cold!) water lately has
been nice therapy for the aches and i can put in a long strong workout
without incurring or aggravating any injuries. yay.

hard to plan any races when i can't even stick with a training plan due
to injuries. and races are why i run! will have to work on my swimming
even more so i can get into racing in THAT sport, i guess. could be
    equally fun.

staying relatively positive about this, but i sure have my moments.

    good day, all,

    Cam

You might want to get a good road bike. With it, you can exercise at
whatever intensity you desire, you can go much further and faster
(generating your own cooling breeze in the process), and it's a whole lot
easier on your body (assuming you don't crash).

It doesn't have the same bone density benefits of weight-bearing exercises
like running, but you can make up for that with weight lifting, walking,
    jump rope, etc.

Good luck, Cam - hope the ITB issues work out. Obviously
you have gone the custom orthotic route? I have them and they
solved ITB problems forever, which used to be chronic as well.

    cheers,

    Hi David,

Yes, I've worn orthotics for years and they did resolve OTHER issues. My
suspicion is that I may need a new design of orthotic.... i believe the
ol' bod has altered in some way over the past few years. this COULD be
the reason for the recurring injury.

    thanks for the thoughts,

    Cam

I do enjoy cycling, as i've been training and doing some triathlons, but
i haven't been able to cycle for very long distances this summer as the
biking still aggravates the existing ITB condition.

i'd hate... no, wait.... HATE to give up running over this. as i
mentioned in another post, i may have to reassess my orthotic situation.
new ones may be in order, and just might solve the problem.

as for doing weights and other stuff, i used to do that, but just can't
motivate myself to do such things anymore. i want/need to get outside
and move around when i exercise.

    thanks for the ideas, though

thanks, Plod. yeah, it is a downer about the running injuries, but at
least i have the bike (moderate distances only) and swimming to fall
    back on.

sorry to hear about YOUR recurring running injuries. cripes, whoever
invented running shoulda come up with the way to run that doesn't tear
    the body apart! 🙂

Cam, you are stuffing your feet and orthotics and removing those silly
liners in a stability or motion control shoe - right? The corollary, not
    a cushioned shoe!

yep Doug, i remove the silly liners. i wear Asics Gel Cumulus, and have
stuck with them my last four pairs. neutral shoe, with some cushioning,
which has worked with the orthotics. so if you're thinking i'm overdoing
it on the overpronation features, i'm not.
