For years and years I refused to wear a helmet for obvious reasons, ugly, uncomfortable,
etc.
Finally a few years ago I bought one just to get my girlfriend off my back it was a cheaper Bell that looked like I was wearing a footabll on me head or one of the creatures of Alien. http://www.hrgiger.com/alien.htm
While discussing the pros and cons of helmets with a few riders at a LBS (Bike Nook , S.F.Ca) Len the owner suggested I try a more upscale helmet. The retention systems and design are much more pleasant and in fact quite dashing.
It came down to two I preferred, a Giro Pneumo or Giro Xen.
I finally chose the Giro Xen and love it. Even though It is designated a MTN helmet and I'm mainly a roadie I like the fit, the design and comfort.

Not really my "favorite," but I use a trek anthem.

I like the design, it feels great, and it's got superb ventiliation.

I ride the Atmos, I think its the same helmet LA rides. Its great (really light and ventilated) but expensive.

I have a Giro Atmos also. It is the lightest helmet I've ever used. It's like not having a helmet on.

I wear the Giro Boreas, the ancestor to the Atmos. I have a little head, so it looks dumb (yes, it fits right) but damn, it's like not wearing a helmet.

The $18.00 Bell that I got at Wallmart. It's comfortable, looks O.K., and effective. This is my second one. The first was retired after I hit a dog and got a baseball sized impact on the right frontal lobe area. That's why I know it's effective, as I'd probably be dead had I not been wearing one.

I wear the Giro Pneumo (the one down from teh Atmos). The Atmos has these little carbon bits that jack the price up, but both great helmets.

The best thing about the Giro is the fit system. Just pop it on your head and push a couple of straps and it sucks on perfectly. Very simple.

I got mine on eBay and saved big $$$.

I also use a Giro Pneumo. Great helmet, light well vented. I cannot agree with you more, the "Roc Lock" system works great, making the helmet fit well while still being comfortable.

Limar 909 Racing Team - light, huge vents, best temple protection on the market, great secure dial-up lock....tried Giro, Trek, Bell, Catlike, and a host of Euro makes...this is the bees knees! (for road and track)

Bell Ghisallo :D big vents, looks damn good, still used by many pros.

wouldnt mind the Sweep though.
