I think that it's absolutely necessary. A minimum of 3 hours should be allocated per cut. There's just 10 easy steps!
1. Properly open the cut with a diamond-tipped awl to get existing debris out. 2. Using a diamond-tipped scalpel, perform delicate surgery to smooth out the jagged edges of the existing rubber (you know how dangerous those are!) 3. Heat up the rubber oven and molds while preparing a toxic brew of various elastomers for thermoplastic mixing. 4. Don the hazmat suit, heliox tank, and nightvision goggles (in case the power goes out) 5. Have emergency paramedics/fire department nearby in case of, uh, trouble. 6. Carefully use a computer-controlled 6-axis servo bench with a microliter syringe to accurately inject the prescribed amount of replacement rubber into the cut. 7. Give the paramedics a couple of beers. 8. Allow several months to cure properly. 9. Mount tire, taking care to inflate slowly in case of blowout. 10. Go ride.
Or just skip steps 1-9.

In my experience you could not be more wrong. Maybe it depends on the road conditions where one rides. The vast majority of my flats are precisely from small bits of sharp sand or glass getting into tiny tire cuts and gradually working through the casing enough to hole the tube. I go over the tires after each ride and dig the embedded bits out. Once the tire gets more than a few small tread cuts, it's useless and must be disgarded. Because of this phenomenon, I get far less mileage from tires than the tread should provide, so it ends up being a pretty expensive problem (maybe 10 ProRace2s per year).
A solution for sealing tread cuts would be great, in my opinion.

I did get flatted once by a nasty, fishhook shaped piece of shell.

You throw salt over your shoulder then. Shoe Goo seems to be the standard stuff to use.
I tried Shoe Goo once. Even though I smoothed it flat, it caused an abrasion which eventually flatted the tube. That tire had no cut cords. I don't obsess about cuts any more.
You are riding crappy tires, that's all. Michelin clincher treads are prone to being cut. they suck. The only worse treads are Vittoria green. they Royally suck.
Buy some real tires, e.g. Continental. Then your problems will vanish.

That's why you are supposed to run the brake pads on the rims, not the tyres ;-)

Sometimes the casing appears to be ok under a tread cut, but if you have a close look inside the tyre once a little bit of dirt has got in there, often the casing shows a little 'fault line'.
IF the nick is small I just use a puncture patch inside the tyre, and if the nick is sunstantial I'll gaffer a bit of plastic in there.

When I was poor student, I would put a piece of webbing or scrap 5 oz kevlar plain weave on the inside of the clincher, with rubber cement. It would stop the "embolism" of the tube through the tyre.
But then I came to my senses and stopped riding clinchers. Now I don't worry about it. I just ride tubulars until the casing comes through the tread.

That's because the casings are made of brown kite string composed of reclaimed undershorts. Sidewall failures are the trademark of continental tires. You don't see them advertising their casing TPI.
What you do see is hocus-pocus. But that's standard for the bicycle business. Just look at the tread patterns and explain what that is about. The same goes for colored tread compounds that you wont find anywhere but on bicycle tires.

Try P-Tex, or maybe some of that latex concrete patch.
Really, the BOB thread has to do with non-casing-penetrating nicks in the tread and not casing cuts, boots, etc. Because I spend so much time in the rain, I get frequent flats (current tires are 25mm Continentals and Avocets on my commuter). Usual culprit is a glass shard that works its way into the tire with lots of lubricating water. I can never recall seeing a shard in an old hole -- and anyway, how could anyone make that determination? Forensic hole aging? This (w)hole thing reminds me of people who preen their chains with coconut oil every night and worry about the luster on their saddle rivets. Are they retired with nothing to do? -- Jay Beattie.
