  1. Hello All.

My name is Jolie and I live in the NYC area. I have lurked
in this group for about a year now and am finally deciding
to come out in the open and admit that I need help. I
imagine that since I have now done this, I will be asking
LOTS of questions and possibly venting a bit in here, so I
    hope you all don't mind.

A little about my history. I was a typical chubby kid, not a
weight problem as much as I just had my baby fat for awhile.
I lost a lot of weight when I was a young teenager
(basically by eating nothing, not effective). I was very
skinny as a teenager, 5'7" and ranging from 100 to 105
    pounds. When I turned 19, I gained 10 pounds. I did not
change my eating habits or lifestyle in any way, I just
gained the weight. I'm not sure if this is hereditary, but
it's interesting to note that both my mom and my sister
gained significant weight at 19 as well.

After this, I would gain 10 pounds a year until I turned 23
and finally was fed up. I joined Weight Watchers in 1998 at
150 pounds and eventually made it to 135 pounds (10 pounds
below my goal) and quit after deciding that was "enough".
However, being delighted with losing this weight, I then
thought it was a license to eat whatever the heck I felt
like eating. Big mistake. Soon, I was back to 150 pounds.

    I re-joined Weight Watchers in 2000 at age 25. I made it
back down to 135 pounds, but then fell ill and quit once
again. Soon after recovering from my illness, I moved to
England, to begin possibly the most stressful period of my
life. My job was VERY stressful (I was a teacher in an inner-
city school in London) and I really missed my home country
(Canada) and my family and friends. I quickly got into the
"London lifestyle" of going to pubs every night and
drinking, then as an afterthought, realizing you hadn't
eaten and ordering "pub food". When I returned home for a
visit, I was horrified to see that I was up to 163 pounds.

I moved back home in late 2002 and since then my mother has
died, I married and moved to the United States. Three very
    life-altering experiences. I now range from 165 to 170
pounds. I have half-heartedly tried to lose the weight since
moving home. I have found that I'm the worst kind of eater.
    I don't eat because I'm hungry or because I'm
sad/lonely/etc. I eat because I want the taste of a
particular food in my mouth. I was a finicky eater as a
child, I ate nothing but junk as a teenager and didn't eat
particularly healthy as an adult. I think that gaining
weight was sort of a blessing, because it has made me
realize that a person needs to eat HEALTHY in order to be
slim and active, etc. It was much easier to lose weight when
I was younger, but now, at age 29, I realize it's not going
    to be as easy.

I cannot work yet, as I have only lived in the US for a
short while and my employment authorization has not come
through yet. So while my husband has a fairly good job, we
don't have lots of extra money to spend on things like
Weight Watchers. I plan to use my old literature and give it
a go. I also intend to schedule exercise into my day
(weights, walking and yoga) My husband is VERY supportive of
me and loves me regardless of how much I weigh, but still I
need even more of a kick in the butt. I look forward to
talking to everyone in this group and hope that I can join
into the support group, because I really am going to need
all the support I can get (and lots of kicks in the butt!!!)

If you've read this far, thanks for listening and I really
look forward to hanging out here! I've already gotten some
great advice as a lurker, so this will be wonderful!

Take care and talk to you soon,

    Jolie

current weight: 165 pounds I hope to weigh 150 pounds by the
end of the summer my ultimate goal is 125 pounds

  2. Hi Jolie, glad you unlurked.

    ==========
Nice to meet you. I am fairly new to this NG as well and to
the weigthwatchers scene. I have lost 9.8 pounds as of last
week's weigh in. I joined in February, I believe.

I'll be floating a few questions for the group as well.

I think I've decided (no scientific basis here, just my
observation) that's just something that women do around that
age. During my senior year of high school I put on a little
over 5 lbs., for no good reason. I think it's just our
bodies readying themselves for the prospect of childbearing.

    Welcome to the group.

    I didn't get married until I was 25, so the 5 lbs I "packed

18/19 was due to something else.

For the record, my husband packed on about 30 lbs after we

  11. Welcome Jolie.

NYC is one of my favorite places. You can do a lot of site
seeing before you start working-enjoy it as you won't have
much chance to do it later. You don't have to shell out lots
of $ to do so either. I used to really like just walking
around the various neighborhoods when I would visit.

Yoga is great. I don't do it nearly as much as I have wanted
to even though it helped me get over a lot of stress and get
healthy at the time. (and i was only doing it once a week)

I think I've decided (no scientific basis here, just my
observation) that's just something that women do around
that age. During my senior year of high school I put on
a little over 5 lbs., for no good reason. I think it's
just our bodies readying themselves for the prospect of
    childbearing.

Most women really pack on the weight as soon as they get
    married.

I did not gain the bulk of my weight until I had a kid (5
yrs married at the time) plus quit smoking.

  13. Thank you Julie. Isn't NYC wonderful? I just love showing it
    off to people.

I used to do yoga and I must say I've tried all sorts of
exercises and I've found yoga to be the most intense, but
wow, what results!!!! Same with Pilates!

Thanks too, to everyone for the warm welcome! Even my

NYC is one of my favorite places. You can do a lot of

Here's a short synopsis of the USA program by Joyce -

How many points you can eat is only based on your current
weight, as you lose weight those points allowed will
decrease (logic is that your body will need less to
operate). At 183 pounds and based on the new US flexpoints
system, you will have a set point target of 24. In addition
to this you are allowed 35 flexpoints to be used throughout
the week ... as well as any activity points you earn on a
particular day. When your weight drops to 175, your target
drops to 22 points ... weight reaches 150, target once
again drop to 20 points. 3 servings of dairy of recommended
per day, 5 servings of fruit and veggies, minimum of 6
    glasses of water.

To calculate food and activity points, I love this computer
    desktop calculator ...
    zythra.compoints.exe

The basic plan is easy. Eat at least your minimum daily
number of points. Points do not carry over from day to day.
You are allotted 35 weekly flexpoints to be used at your
discretion ... can divide them up and use daily (would be an
additional 5 points per day) or save them and use them for a
special occassion during the week. Activity points are
earned based when exercising, but can ONLY be used on the
    day they are earned.

If you can afford $15/month, the online ww program might be
a great thing for you to look into. There is lots of
information available, as well as the food point database
    and journaling system.

Joyce WW starting weight: 228.8 - 2/5/02 current weight:
    133.3 Lifetime: 4/4/03

Please note that if you live in onther countries (UK,
Australia, NZ, Europe), the Points plans are different. The
UK and Australia/NZ calculate points based on saturated fat
and total kilojoules. Most of Europe calculates based on
total fat and total kilojoules. The desktop calculator above
can handle all of these programs.

Disclaimer: As an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup, asdww is
unusual in that most of the people who participate are
respectful, considerate folks who freely share their
experience with and knowledge of WW, weight loss, and
maintenance. Yet occasionally, spammers, trolls, and flamers
show up to post advertising, false information, insults, and
the like. Nearly all of the time, people like this are just
trying to yank someone's chain. Most of the regulars on this
newsgroup offer their experience as a suggestion to try if
you're stuck, but are quick to advise that each person has
to find what works for him/herself. If someone posts
something that doesn't sound right to you, ask the
newsgroup, ask your WW leader, or ask your health
    professional.

weight was sort of a blessing, because it has made me
realize that a person needs to eat HEALTHY in order to be
slim and active, etc. It was much easier to lose weight
when I was younger, but now, at age 29, I realize it's not
    going to be as easy.

I cannot work yet, as I have only lived in the US for a
short while and my employment authorization has not come
through yet. So while my husband

Here's a short synopsis of the USA program by Joyce -

How many points you can eat is only based on your current
weight, as you lose weight those points allowed will
decrease (logic is that your body will

    need

    Quoted message said:

less to operate). At 183 pounds and based on the new US
    flexpoints system,

    you

    Quoted message said:

will have a set point target of 24. In addition to this
you are allowed 35 flexpoints to be used throughout the
week ... as well as any activity points you earn on a
particular day. When your weight drops to 175, your target
drops to 22 points ... weight reaches 150, target once
again drop to 20 points. 3 servings of dairy of
recommended per day, 5 servings of fruit and veggies,
minimum of 6 glasses of water.

To calculate food and activity points, I love this
    computer desktop calculator ...
    zythra.compoints.exe

The basic plan is easy. Eat at least your minimum daily
number of points. Points do not carry over from day to
day. You are allotted 35 weekly flexpoints

    to

    Quoted message said:

be used at your discretion ... can divide them up and use
daily (would be an additional 5 points per day) or save
them and use them for a special occassion during the week.
Activity points are earned based when exercising, but

    can

    Quoted message said:

ONLY be used on the day they are earned.

If you can afford $15/month, the online ww program might
be a great thing for you to look into. There is lots of
information available, as well as the food point database
    and journaling system.

    When

    Quoted message said:

    I

    Quoted message said:

turned 19, I gained 10 pounds. I did not change my
eating habits or lifestyle in any way, I just gained the
weight. I'm not sure if this is hereditary, but it's
interesting to note that both my mom and my sister
gained significant weight at 19 as well.

After this, I would gain 10 pounds a year until I turned
    23 and finally

    was

    Quoted message said:

fed up. I joined Weight Watchers in 1998 at 150 pounds
