Yes there is an off-path trail there, but no, I haven't ridden it myself. From memory the Ring Road trail is rather well connected to other bike paths.

For a really good and detailed map of Melbourne's bicycle path/lane network, Vic Roads has one available on their web site.

Also consult www.street-directory.com.au, which is an online version of the latest Melways. This also has bike paths marked in it, but the Vic Roads map would be most recent re: path construction.

(If you zoom in enough on that Vic Roads interactive map, it too turns into a Melways.)

Yup, I've ridden most of it at different times. I might ride up the Darebin or Merri paths til they hit the ring road, then ride to the other. Also around to the Moonee Ponds Ck path.

It's not a great run, fairly exposed if windy and often has glass on it, but it is open and wide for most of it so you can get a good speed up.

I've ridden a bit of it. You're compeletely right - it's not the most fun you'll ever have on two wheels.

The loop I've done is starting in Kensington on the Mooney Ponds Ck Trail, go north until you hit the Western Ring Road Trail, West along that (yup, exposed, windy), then hook up with the Maribyrnong Ck trail at Brimbank Park and ride that all the way back to Kensington.

Not super picturesque or nice, but a good little bit of adventure, especially on a singlespeed.

If you live in Greensborough though, I'd be more inclined to head North East. Roads are quiet, trees are nice....Magpies are fierce....
