  1. I ride around 4 times a week, usually around 3 rides of say
    30 to 40 k's, at an average speed of 25k's to 30 k's an
hour. I have been doing this for over 8 months now Then once
    a week I will do a 100 k ride.

I consider myself pretty fit, but not a Lance Armstrong, and
don't get to tired too easy.

But yesterday on my 100 k ride, around half way, I was
stuffed, my legs felt sore, and I just seemed to run out
    of energy.

I drink lots of water as I go, and at the halfway mark, I
have my power bar energy chocolate, so what happened
    yesterday.

Is this a normal thing ? I don't feel sick or anything.

Does this happen often to you guys. ?

    Thanks for any feedback

    You might be overtraining.

Or, you might have something that you don't know about
yet. I had a bad day going into work one day, (averaged
about 50% slower than I normally do) had no idea what it
was- couldn't explain it. Next day had a niggly throat.
Next day after that it was evident I had a throat
infection. Caught it from my three year old niece (I
should have coined in on the fact that she was coughing
her guts out a few days earlier)...

  3. Perhaps someone can give me an idea as to what is and is not realistic. I've bought a 2nd hand MTB from a friend as started to use it to commute to uni. This is a new thing for me and I've been doing it now for about two months. The ride to uni and back isn't all that far, about 7-8km each way and fairly flat (for Melbournians, along Warrigal Rd. from Oakleigh train station to Holmesglen TAFE and then along a bike path to Deakin Uni in Burwood). This evening I decided to go for a ride to just blow out the cobwebs (a first for me!) and rode from Oakleigh to Brunswick St in Fitzroy and back (about 25km and one hour each way) Now to the main point. I started riding for cost reasons, but I like the fitness aspect that I'm getting out of it as well. I quit smoking at the end of last year, but I'm still reaping the rewards of a 16 year habit and a sedentary lifestyle. Last time I looked (before I started riding) I weighed about 90kg and I'm only 5'6" tall. I'm 33 years old. So, if I want to get fit, lose weight and get around faster on the bike, what sort of training should I think about? I'm not looking to compete in any way, this is purely about improving quality of life. Any and all suggestions will be gratefully received. Sorry for length of post.

  4. Hi,
have a look/lurk around the existing threads on Cycle Training further down the Cycling Forums site, maybe information there which can help you out.

a few possibilities (in increasing order of likelihood)

a 'lergy' brewing (its that time of year folks)

what you have/had been doing over the last few days/directly before ride.

Eating the powerbar at the halfway mark will only kick in after half an hour or so later so the biggest question is:
What did you eat (if anything) BEFORE your ride?
If youre used to this distance and you get weaker in the first half, the damage was obviously with you at the start, not developed during the ride, hence what (if anything you ate before/the night prior???)

Dem gels may be an acquired taste but they can get you out of the 'bonkin blues' in a hurry far better than a powerbar (but dont leave the PB at home either!)
