  1. Too busy to take time to go get a shot...(dumb)...New Year's Eve morning I sensed a general
fatigue/malaise...by afternoon I had a major sore throat...immediately went to the drug store and
dropped about $75 on all sorts of junk....went to bed early...woke up with zero energy, no
appettite, a fever, and had to stay in bed till 2 pm in that afternoon New Year's day. In 2 1/2 days
I could eat 1 bowl of soup and a very small bowl of rice that's it. Totally sucks. This is not how I
wanted to start the new year in training. Haven't ran in 4 days, feel like I'm at about 33% of my
normal strength-energy level and am going to force myself to consume all the V8 & OJ I can. 1st week
of my 16 week marathon training program is totally shot....because my dumb ass did not get a
shot......folks...this FLU going around is whopper! Get your shot ASAP.

  2. Same here. I've only managed 8 miles this week as a result. Tried killing it with alcohol. May get
back on the road today or tomorrow.

  3. I got the shot and it still took a week to recover. It's been two weeks now and I still have snot
off and on! I couldn't eat for 5 days. Take it easy coming back, 'cuz you don't want to be 5 weeks
into your marathon program and get it again.

Sorry to hear it. I wanted to get one and the place I was going to get it ran out ... so I'm just
hanging in there ... I hope there are more shots available soon, I doubt this beautiful weather will
    continue through January.

Boston's beginning to loom large, hope you're back on the road soon.

I picked up the virus on the day after Thanksgiving. Three weeks later I was still coughing up stuff
from my lungs. It was the first time I ever recall having the flu.

If it's any consolation, the shots are for a different variety of the flu that most people
    are getting.

    Dear suffering runners,

For what it's worth, can I console you by saying that this is by far the worst flu season I've
ever seen, and the season has just begun? About vaccinations:

    1. Flu shot still helpful even if not fully protective against every case.
    2. Flu shots have run out in most places. Can't get one in my office, or my entire city for
    that matter.
    3. Flu vaccination comes not only in a shot, but also in an inhaled nasal squirt mist for the first
time ever this year. This nasal vaccine is recommended for healthy adults ages 5-49 who are NOT
healthcare workers and who will NOT be likely to come into contact with folks at risk for
suffering severely from flu (immunocompromised folks like cancer patients, AIDS patients, etc.).
There is some speculation that the nasal mist vaccine is better than the shot, although I don't
think there is any meaningful proof. As for the downside, it is generally NOT covered by
insurance and thus costs $40-60 out of pocket. But if you are terrified of flu, and this year
you should be, it is a very good option and it is plentifully available. You may wish to
    consider it.

Hope you all either avoid flu or recover quickly. Best regards, -- Joshua Steinberg MD, Syracuse

  8. Or is it that you're the biggest sissy to ever get sick? Whiner.

Some (many?) insurance companies are re-thinking this, as the "regular" stuff gets in shorter to

Here, close to NYC, the nasal mist flu shot costs $105 - that's what my doctor's office quoted me.
It is, however, covered by at least some of the large insurance companies. I had our benefits guy
check for me and, even though my doctor's office told me my insurance wouldn't cover it, it turns
out the health insurance company had just changed their policy and _was_ covering it after all. My
insurance is Guardian Health Net; United Heatlh Care also covers it.

The nasal flu mist is also not recommended for those who suffer with asthma, even if they are
otherwise healthy. (That includes me - I was checking around for the mist for my kids.)

One more point - it's worthwhile to ask at local health departments. My kids' pediatrician ran out
of the flu shot as did just about everyone else around here but the health department two towns away
had it and that's where my kids both got their shots.
