Bad form to reply to own post'n' all that. Should point out that the
bike did NOT come from Halfords, though they did send a little tool kit
to me as some form of compensation for arsing about.

Top marks to Cycleworld in Thornhill, for entering into the convoluted
business dealings that are part and parcel of dealing with Halfords.

He's never mentioned it. Perhaps he's buying one bit-by-bit and so far he's
only managed the seatpost?

Have you got Schwalbe Marathons? If not, might be a Cunning Plan, as
they're relatively bombproof. Think I've managed 2 punctures in 5
years, rather than 5 in 3 months...

True if such were easily available. Luckily this last puncture was a
slow one which a couple of pumps managed to get me home. The previous
one was up Watership Down where a bus has probably never been seen -
ever, and the nearest taxi would be many notes way.

Its good to hear. I suffer from very weak hands/wrists, one where I cut
through the thumb's tendon virtually losing its use, and the other
through a form of RSI, so anything that makes life easier is welcomed.

Do you have particularly monster thumbs? I was playing with changing
marathons on brompton wheels yesterday, and much swearing was had. (these
weren't new ones either).

No, rather the opposite, if anything (my left thumb is certainly
weakened after a minor dislocation skiing a few years ago). I often
have to resort to a little help from a tyre lever to get a tyre back on,
and while on the one hand I know it's meant to be better not to do it
that way and just use thumbs, I've never yet managed to prang a tube
that way in ~30 years of opportunities.

Whilst the CTC shop no longer carries them, grr. The old CTC shop does
still carry them. I've never used it with a Brompton as I have yet to
get into fold, unfold, yet.
