You might want to move to Windows 2000, if only for the security
upgrades. It will generally run on any '98 capable machine, and
typically faster IMHE. You might need a little more memory to get
reasonable speed. It thrashes a lot at 256mb. You get compatibility
with everything new. Look for private sales... ebay is overpriced.

So I copy my data from the previous years turbo-tax, and go to my brothers
place, who has an xp machine, and install turbo on his machine, and put my

forced to buy a Vista machine. BTW, my '98 machine does everything I want

you-tube, or stream video, but I'm stuck with 48 k dial-up because of the
ancient telephone switching stations in the area I live. So here I am
happy, but always someone is trying to force you to upgrade, it drives you

Like Campagnolo, Macintosh can have some issues, but is preferable to
a PC, particularly now with dual core, I can run all the MS
software...Mac Mni-cheap too...$600, already had a monitor, keyboard,
mouse.

Back in the 90's computers were still expensive, so I built my own so to
speak. Basically bought a case, the motherboard, hard drive, and processor
that I wanted, put it together, and it's still running good. But today,
like bikes, it's cheaper to buy the whole computer than parts and assembling
them. If I make a move, it'll be when they get the bugs out of vista, and
just buy a whole new computer. I did go the Linux route at one time, but it
was like creating a job for myself. I like Linux better than MS, but it
takes a lot of lot of personal involvement to make it do what you want to
do, and I already have a major hobby, it's called cycling.

All bike parts fail eventually. I know because I ride 10,000+ miles a
year. I have bikes 7 years old, that if didn't upgrade I would have to look
through some guys cardboard boxes at a garage sale, for parts and these
bikes are not that old. I do some of that anyway, bike swap meets are a
hoot, to look for old stuff. But basically, you eventually have to upgrade.
Name me a bike part or accessory that will never eventually fail? I've only
had one, and I think I'm an exception, is the frames. Helmets are pretty
good (giro), but I had one where the foam separated at the very front, from
old age. And one pneumo where the foam was flattened, inside the helmet,
when I was in a pace line bike crash and hit a curb head first. So that
helmet had to be tossed too. I even had the innocent bottle cage break,
with a lead acid battery in it, swinging by my head from the cord several
times before I could get the bike stopped on a descent. Another reason to
wear a helmet.

I can see where he's coming from. I've got an XTR equipt hardtail
with a 1" headtube, V-brakes & a 7-speed rear set and when looking for
a new fork 90% of the shops I went to told me "that's obsolete, buy a
new bike with disk brakes and a 1-1/8" headtube". I'm still looking
for a good 1" threadless suspension fork that isn't $500.

Top notch advise right there. I've been riding my SS road bike, BMX &
my pawn shop Marin double-bounce since I blew the hardtail forks up.

As for taxes, being a first-time homeowner this year I took everyone's
advice and paid to have them done. It was the exact same thing as
doing it myself, only I had some nitwit sloth whose presence annoyed
me reading me the questions instead of me reading them myself. That,
and the cost. Never again...

Isn't that deduction subject to the 2 percent cap for miscellaneous
deductions? You gotta spend a lotta $25's in my neck of the
socioeconomic woods to come up with a deduction on that line, and then

According to the intuit site it runs on w2k. I guess I'll find out
this weekend.

I'm not a huge fan of ms even though I make my living using their
stuff. I'm trying to make the switch to Ubuntu but it is slow going,
mostly trying to get it to work with Windows infrastructure- poor
printer driver support for my existing printer, esoteric process for
getting VPN to work, but I'm still looking forward to using it. I'm
sick of bloated OS forcing hardware upgrades, and how much the OS
itself costs, especially the "professional" versions which you need
for stability. It would be nice to see Ubuntu reach Mac ease of
installation. It probably does for a lot of people but my requirements
are somewhat advanced.

10k a year, blimey, have you ever broken a frame or fork? Reason i ask
is that i do about 5k and i've built up a straight bar tourer with 40h
washered wheels, but when i apply the front brake and rock the bike,
there's alot of rocking play from the give in the forks. I'm thinking
that they are too light for heavy miles and the fork flex will lead to
a fork blade snapping. Can you buy off the peg Reynolds or Surly heavy
duty forks with 1" 210mm threaded steerer?

I started using TurboTax when I could no longer drive to the library and
get the forms. It was worth my time just to buy the software, which has
all the forms, then to drive to find the forms.

Blimey, do your govmint not do the interweb? We can download the forms from
the website, or even do the entire thing online in the majority of cases.

i awoke to find the 27" conti's were dinosaured: new 700 rear wheel
and tires: aramid belts. so i went and packed away 3-4 MO 8 speed
chains and clusters. new sidepull brakes replacing center pulls. spec
minkow seat replacing the hardhardtail OEM. $10 ergobar , the pain
went away, i could breathe. deore hubs: i spend the weekends not over
the wheels. deore rear deray keeps me from snagging the peacocks.

highlight, pdf search, download, four screens in the taskbar: seven
calculator boxes storing info in split screen.

Just about any competent LBS which commonly services bicycles will have
1" threaded current model boinger forks for well below $100. CrMo
replacements are also ubiquitous and cheap. (if your bike is pre-1995
then you _will_ need to buy vintage)

Does it really take significantly longer to do it on the computer than
it does with a calculator and pencil with paper forms? I found it
takes significantly *less* time to do it the old fashioned way
compared to using software to do my Canadian taxes. Maybe it's
different in the USA.
