Incidentally, as I was riding home from work yesterday, a driver
deliberately steered their car into the gutter in the queue at the
traffic lights, all to stop me passing him/her on the inside (which
wouldn't have been a problem initially, as no cars were turning left -
the road wasn't even especially busy - and there was plenty of space
for me to get through *safely* before the actual cut-up attempt). Is
it just me, or was said motorist being a bit selfish and petty?

No, it's not just you. I've seen this several times when cycling and when
in cars. In somecases the drivers have pulled in because a narrow road
expands to fill two lanes at the junction but in other cases it can't be
anything other than petty spite.

It's especially galling when someone does this to block the cycle lane

that stop in the middle of junctions so no-one else can move, turning
right sit in the gutter, turning left sit on the centre line, charge at
anyone who's entered a roundabout already even though they're not on it
when you did just because they're comming from the right....

Last nights "another un doubted idiot" (audi) driver being a prime example.

That football player should have got jail time IMHO, anyone less
important (in whose view?) would have....

No, it's not just you. I've seen this several times when cycling and
when in cars. In somecases the drivers have pulled in because a narrow
road expands to fill two lanes at the junction but in other cases it
can't be anything other than petty spite.

I remember one particular knob-head playing this trick a few years ago.
I was cycling slowly up a hill towards a light-controlled junction. He
pulled in so sharply that his wheels stuck on the kerb. The lights
changed and he had to reverse to get away from the kerb before moving
off - at which point I still hadn't caught up to him anyway...

It wasn't the smartest of ideas to pull off such a manoeuvre at that
location, either, as the traffic lights I mentioned are right outside
the main Cop Shop in Watford! Which speaks volumes about
intelligence/lack thereof of said driver.

Since my new commute now means I get to pass queues of traffic (on the
outside) I have be pleasantly surprised by the number of drivers who
pull in to allow me more room to pass. For which they get a wave of thanks.

The selfish and petty motorists are a annoying minority.

It's amazing how many drivers are that stupid. I see dozens every
day sit on the box junction outside our local police station, put there
to let police vehicles get out when cars are queuing past the station.

Talk about asking for a ticket!

Big problem is Matt, they don't get tickets ............ don't learn,

Some also steer to the centre line at mway and dc jams to stop
motorbikes filtering. They've got the hump cos you're making
progress and they're not.

I'm surprised how many drivers see me in their door mirrors coming up the
inside of a slow moving jam and pull over to let me through as I approach
(maybe to reduce the chance of damage to their paintwork?).

Do the mirrors on BMWs work? Are you sure that there not just little
photographs stuck in the binacles? I was under the impression that,
like the indicators and main-beam dipper, working ones were optional extras.

I make a point of filtering on the outside whenever possible for
exactly this reason. Motorists are more used to checking that side, I
think because while knocking a lycra-wearing treehugging hippie off
his bike is acceptable collateral damage (and the rider is unlikely to
catch up) they don't want to be beset upon by big guys in black
leather and Tuff Boots who are probably also satanists.

Also, if they do do something stupid I can often take evasive action
into the oncoming lane, which generally works out a lot simpler than
trying to jump the kerb at a shallow angle would be.
