I don't know if it's my monitor, but this guy Friedes (kbnj.com) who
demos kettlebell exercises looks rather smallish. I expected to see a
monster after reading his many good articles. Is it Steve in the videos
or some actor?
I never lifted a KB in my life but I look twice as big as the guy in
the video.
Thanks

(Hey, he's STILL taller than Will Brink.)
"13% body fat, I'm not exactly a big guy. As a middle aged desk jockey
with a bad back who likes to run, swim, and bicycle, I'm not your
ideal candidate for military pressing a 70 lb. kettlebell over my head
with one arm - but I did it, and not by acquiring big muscles, either.
I gained no weight nor did I lose any body fat. I just, plain and
simple, got stronger, and you can, too."So, yeah, Freides admits to being not exactly...

Steve was scrawny and weak before lifting, and scrawny but
much stronger after lifting. His goal as I understand it is to be scrawny and
strong-- he's not that interested in getting huge.Cheers,

In all fairness to Steve, the OP's comment reminds of many of the posts
in MFW years ago, when newbies would arrive and say, "I weigh [censored] and
have XX-inch arms!" My response? "Yeah, I've seen obese women with
similar descriptions riding the electric carts at WalMart."It's about strength and muscle, not just size.

Actually, he's not interested at all in getting any bigger than he is
now. Nor does he care if I want purple hair. -

Stephen
This is all related to that using-KBs-for-size thread we had running for a
while. Fact is KB'ers are all about functional strength--either they look
like Mike Mahler, Pavel T, or Steve (and MM's big by man on the street
standards but not by weightlifter's standards) or they fall over to the
other side and do strongman stuff. Lots of martial artists on the dragondoor
site--people for whom a lot of bulk is often NOT a good thing.Hugh

abs. The "functional" school says that the posterior chain is what you
need to be "functional" and that big pecs and abs don't do much in that
regard. I think big pecs and abs are what most people find impressive.Steve "at least I'm taller than Will Brink" Freides

Almost everyone with the exception of some children and dwarves are

Steve,
I'm a little surprised that some state that KBs don't contribute to
size that much. I do want to build more definition and strength (I play
rec ice hockey for 40+ league).
I notice you wear only socks in the videos. Is this the best method for
KB movements? Sorry for "smallish size" comments. Actually that Russian
Pavel KB guy don't look that huge either....Thnx

goals aren't our goals, that's fine - use whatever method works best for
you. No apology is necessary. I am the size I wish to be. Pavel is
about 6' and 180 lbs. and has deadlifted 585 lbs. I believe he will be
at the AAU meet on June 19 in California, along with me and many others,
and you can come and compete with us or spectate. I am satisfied with
my "definition" and would like to acquire more strength but I'm very
pleased with how strong I've gotten over the last few years.I wear socks only because it's cold in my basement. When it's warmer, I
usually lift barefoot. When I'm wearing shoes to lift in, they're
Converse AllStars. I come from a long line of shoe-haters. 🙂One can gain size lifting kettlebells, barbells, dumbbells, or rocks and
logs. It's ain't the shape that matters, it's what you do with it.
It's perfectly possible to use any of the above to increase only
strength, increase strength and size both, or just about any other
fitness goals. But some tools are better suited for some jobs than
others, and I find a mix of barbell lifts and kettlebell lifts is what
works for me.
