Hi all, Bought a new bike (05 Specialized Allez Comp -triple) came with a FSA Gossamer 52/42/30 hollow BB, nice looking and seems to perfrom ok but my thought is to replace with a D/A or Ultegra since the bike came stock with rear D/A der and all else Ultegra. I've been long time Shimano guy and have no experience with FSA equipment. I don't dislike the crank per say but just unsure of it. Also, any idea why Specialized would use this crank versus Shimano (besides most likley cost) Any opinions or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

If it's working fine, why replace it? Now if you're considering going from a triple to a double you could go for the Simano. I have a bike with an FSA Team Issue Carbon and it's an awesome pro level crank. FSA is surely not a low end brand. Cost is probably the big factor. You can pick up a triple Ultegra at Supergo for $100 right now if you insist on having a full Shimano setup. My advice would be to ride what ya got. Cranks don't really wear out, although your big ring will wear over time, but that's only a $30 replacement part.

Personally, I think that would be a total waste of money. New bike, new crank – just leave it alone.

FSA is a great brand. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. I have an FSA Team Carbon on my bike as well (believe me, I got flak for this), but it gets the job done and makes for a nice ride. IMO, keep what you have. Why spend more money?

There is no reason to run an all-Shimano bike. I picked an FSA Team Carbon crank (with their Megatech OS BB) for my custom frame. The rest of the group is DA.
Pinarello uses FSA Carbon on their high-end Dogma which is otherwise Campy Record.
Personally, I pick non-Shimano components when possible...the competition is good.

Hey Ouibyk, if that is a 9-speed Octalink 172.5 tripple FSA Gossamer, I have a like Ultegra new in box that I'll trade you! Seriously though, you're not going to see any performance difference between those two cranks. Perhaps you can mistreat your drivetrain to hasten it's demise. 😉

The TCR 1 from giant comes with FSA carbon cranks, I've been asking myself the same question when the TCR 0 has the Dura Ace. Only things I can think of is the weight and the consistency of having carbon on a carbon bike.

I picked a Team Carbon crank because I liked the way it looked with the CF rear stays on my new frame. Figured a little bit of bling never hurts. More important, the crank and chainrings are still looking and working like new after 6000 miles.
But, think the real answer here is bottom-line cost. As a fellow major Taiwanese producer, I'll bet FSA gives Giant a much better OEM price than Shimano. Giant is getting the market appeal of CF for less money.

Everything I have heard about FSA is positive, so I'm not sure I would see any benefit in swapping out the cranks for Ultegra or DA. DA isn't cheap, and for the money you would spend on a new DA crankset, you could put toward a nice set of wheels. IMHO, upgrading wheels will give you the best bang-for-your-buck as far as performance. 😎

I hate to dig up an old thread, but I found this same bike in the LBS last night. It's about $1,000 less than my budget, which is nice. With block pedals, it was around 18.5 lbs. Talking with the sales people, they said I could upgrade components etc. So it got me thinking, I think I'd prefer the FSA carbon triple 53/39/30 over the FSA G2 (based on weight AND gearing). Anybody know the weight difference between these parts? I looked on FSA's website, but couldn't find it (it's a "specialized" part (pun intended)). I'd most likely do a different wheel set too....

When you replace cranksets you need to be aware of the specifics.....in many cases different cranks require different bottom brackets. CF is the rage these days, I got a deal on some Profile Design CF cranksets. Just be sure that what you buy is compatible with your BB and FD......Good Luck🙂 --Rob--
