Fuji Tourer now in Australia

Nice bike, lets hope we see more of the Fuji range available here
(Melbourne please!!).

Concerning the price though... On Fuji's website its listed rrp is $840
usd which is equal to around $1170 aud.

$1600+ aud here, what's going on? 🙁

Looking at the pic it looks as though its got a quil stem / threaded
headset? If so a good idea for a touring bike.

Imo the Fuji World is more an audax style bike than 'full-on tourer'.
From what I've read an 853 frame and carbon fork are not ideal gear for
loaded touring.

Yes it has!! and, although i never noticed it, it's also supposed to have
somewhere that you can carry spare spokes, I'll have to have another look at
that next time i see it.

mmm good point, i'll have to go and have another look at the 'World' , i

thought it actually looked a bit more robust than the straight tourer ( I

As for the price, yes well, I guess they are playing on the fact that
there's little available in touring bikes here which is why it'd be good
that more people buy them so there'll hopefully be more competition in the
market place and then hopefully better bikes get more cheaper when the
original bikes sold which start to become available on the used bike market
when they become superceded.....well, it kinda works in the motorcar
industry.
Also, when you look at the price of making the bike, then you have the
profit from the US distributors,shipping, then the taxes(import duty)
getting them here as well as GST, then, the profit for Australian
distributors goes on then the profit for the bike shops, is it any wonder
that they cost a motza for the customer and why they devalue so quickly.
I mean, why is it that the Cannondale T2000 is about $3,499? same reason!!
Cannondale has good name in cycling yes, but compare the $3,499 to about
$1,600 to $2,000, the fuji still looks much better value.

Also, on enquiry, Clarence St.Cycles( Sydney) have the Trek 520 on special
at around $2,099 this month which is excellent value as their price is
normally about $2,500. decisions decisions!!

As Gescom pointed out, the fuji tourer was listed in the US for $840

retail, so I'd say it would have cost around the $400-500 mark wholesale in
the States.So assuming that our dollar is worked out at $0.70 to the usd,
that would make it about $650 aussie dollars wholesale plus all the import
duties , shipping costs, insurance, transport to wholesalers depot and our
lovely GST.
Assuming that we work on the retail figure of US $840, it comes to the
equivelant of Aus $1,170 in the usa, well i guess the taxes, insurance,
transportation costs and wholesale and retail profits will make up the
remaining $500-700 that we are being charged, plus i think also that because
there isn't much in the way of Touring bikes here and the high cost of them
that are here, they think that this is pretty much competitive when you put
the fuji up against the Trek 520 for example which after speaking to some of
the ppl at bikeshops and also eurosolutions, I think that the Trek 520 (rrp
$2399) is the one they are aiming against.

I'm not in the bicycle business so i really wouldn't know the profit margins
allowable in Australia, I can only assume with reasonable logic of where the
price build-up would come from, but when you look at the rest of the market
with MTB's & Racers, being very competetive in brands and numbers sold, then
perhaps it might be safe to say that as they've introduced a touring bike
here especially for the touring/commuter market in amongst all the hybrids
out there, that they wouldn't expect to sell all that many in comparison.

The Mongoose Randonneur ex, which has got a nice write up in Aus cycling
mag, retails for about Aus$1575 or there abouts, the next being the Trek 520
which retails for around $2399 so, I guess the Fuji is nicely placed in the
middle to make it more desirable and worth their while.Cannondale is well
over the $3,000 mark.

Last but not least, as I stated before, if more cyclist bought tourers, then
there'll be more competition hence lower prices. We are only a very small
market by comparison and shipping anything here from anywhere costs a
fortune.(although its often been noted that domestic transport costs(wharf
to wharehouse) exceed that per unit of the international shipping costs)

Yes Hippy, it is the '04 model. Red finish with similar components as
the '03 but better looking in my opinion.

it might be the alternative to your fixed gear road bike.

In addition to the Hillbrick, I've look at the KHS, Cannondale, Avanti,
Specialized, Raceline, Cecil walker and the Bianchi (which is not
available in Oz but the pista concept frameset is)

the fuji won coz it was available in my size (49cm) and already drilled
for a front brake. Plus it was great value for money. I've been looking
for a fixie for 1.5 years while riding my converted fixed gear MTB and
it's been a fustrating process ... so I'm glad that I've finally found
something that fullfills my requirements.

I made enquires yesterday regarding the RRP of the Fuji Tourer, in it's

standard form it is $1529 but many bikeshops are doing their own upgrades
like better rims and possibly dyno-hubs etc

It'll be interesting what that price ends up as!!

Track bikes are pretty rare compared to roadies but I suppose tourers

discount, they'd still have to make something out of it..........makes
wonder what the actual profit margin average is per bike.

I guess also that it's mainly the add-ons that make the difference as well,
most people when buying a bike will spend extra on cycling clothes,
bidons,lights, upgraded components and not to mention helmets.

If you've bought a tack bike, then you haven't got the extra cost of
gearing...am I right? what would that bike you've bought cost with tiagra
STI shifeters, Deore rear etc?

But still. good buying Koon, hope you really enjoy your new

I'm not sure I get you with the add ons. i was comparing the RRP from
Fuji in the US and from the distributor here regarding the Track and the
Tourer bike.

It seems to me that the tourer is much more inflated ... which seems
really weird coz anybody these days can get online and check out what
the bike costs in the states ... and after seeing how much more this
particular model costs compared to another (within the same brand), I
probably wouldn't buy it knowing that it could be alot cheaper. I.e.
somebody somewhere is taking a lot more of my money then they should be.
But that's just my opinion ... people buy what they think is worth their
money and I have no problems with that.

Regarding the track bike ... check out the KHS, Bianchi USA and Fuji
websites. All these brands have basic track bikes and you'll notice that
their entry level ROAD bikes aren't that much more expensive. From a
manufacturer's point of view, it doesn't cost alot to have gears etc
since they buy everything in bulk. In some cases it might even cost more
to produce a track bike since the frames are different and will be
produced in much smaller quantities. Not to mention, the cranks and
wheels are different too and those will also be produced in much smaller
quantities.

BTW, the fuji bike is great ... I suspect the tourer will be a
great bike too.

of the tourers available cost. I had a local framemaker build me up a
lovely frame from scratch, and they did a great job for the price. The
other excellent bit was you can then specify *everything* yourself, not
having to make do with whatever they feel like padding this season's
model with.

The builders were Quantum in Perth/WA.

Yeah Till, an excellent suggestion about getting a frame built with the
rider's specs, and I have considered it myself.
May I ask you, did you get your bike made up as a full blown tourer, what
specs did you request and if it's not too impolite, what was the final cost
of the bike when received?
Do you do much in the way of fully loaded touring or mostly commuting?
I'm actually surprised that here in Australia, that because there are not
many touring bikes avail on our market in comparison to the US or UK, that
some of the more well known frame makers don't try to make up an Australian
tourer like in the old days when many bikes were in fact made here instead
of manufactured in the cheaper asian countries.In the US for example, they
have the Bruce Gordon tourers which are very popular and built to last and i
think they actually specialize just in touring bikes and accessories like
racks, panniers etc.Trek has also got the 520 tourer which is hand made in
the US, but it's around US$1,200 there and Aus $2,399 here.

I'd say one good thing about getting one made up is that yu can specify your
gearing straight off without having to upgrade or change what is on offer as
you stated.

The frame was $1550 for 853 for the main triangle, with 725 for stays.
They usually use 531, and that is a bit cheaper iirc. The bike was built
by the now-defunct gordos in perth.

Yeah, for me that was the kicker. I didnt want ali so steel was the
choice. Snapped up some bar end shifters, deore 48/36/26 cranks, mavic
T520 rims, xt brakes (with travel agents) and tubus racks =)
