Quoted message said:I am doing a term paper and am interested in information reagarding functional swimwear. If you
please let me know what you see as functional swimwear and why. Do you consider a bikini as
functional swimwear? I would like to know the range of functional swimwear as used by swimmers.
Also if anyone notices the bikini effect in a swimming environment. My position is that bikinis
are not functional and would like input from swimmers or anyone reading this as to what they know.
Thanks, any feedback would be helpful.

Most folks already covered the fact that bikinis are not the first choice for competitive, pool
swimming...
A short story to illustrate why:
While swimming in recreational summer club, an older girl (18 yrs. old) wore a bikini to race in.
Our coach had repeatedly asked her not to as she would fiddle with the straps while swimming
freestyle (flipping in flip turns, etc.).
At our state meet she swam the 200 IM. When she dove in, the neck ties loosened. The suit stayed on
and in place through her the first
75 (150 fly and 1 25 of the 50 back). When she pushed off the wall, her top became twisted. It took
her a couple of strokes to realize that it was no longer correctly covering her chest. She had
to stop and DQed herself.
Because of the number of points assosciated with her just finishing (only a few people raced in that
age class in summer club)...her race made a huge difference in our final standing (3rd place vs.
1st). Every swimmer knows that when you lose the team competition, you all lose it. But a DQ can
seriously kill a team.
I've never raced in a properly fitted wet suit, but I'll chose any high tech racing suit (ie
Speedo/Nike's channeled suits) over racing in a paper (1 layer of nylon) suit.
