Well there's no menu button. When on trip page I can press the enter button
and this allows me to reset trip or change fields, but I can't find any way
of resetting the odometer. rest trip doesn't reset the odometer. (Garmin
Etrex - yellow + black)

You really need someone with a yellow etrex. The advice above works with
my Vista C. What I had forgotten was that the menu button is the enter
button on early etrexs. Advice would also work with my early summit,
giving the choice of Big heading, reset max speed and reset trip. On the
basis of how my GPSs work I would have said you have a faulty device if
reset trip doesn't reset odometer. What does your instruction manual
say?

On the older eTrex models I believe there is no way to reset the total
odometer other than a complete 'master reset' which will lose all sorts
of other things (like your screen layouts). I forget what a master reset
involves, but basically it's holding something(s) down while you power
on. You should then get a screen asking 'do you REALLY REALLY want to
throw away all the user data', and you have to select 'yes, bite me'.

Have to admit I hadn't noticed there was an odometer and a trip odometer.
Can't see anywhere in the manual re-resetting the overall odometer, but
resetting the trip resets the trip odometer, so that me sorted really, but I
might try and check with Garmin re the overall odometer.

Whether you bought it last month or five years ago, its still got the same
features (*)

(* with one major hardware change to allow better battery life a couple of
years back).

It did a lot more than that! It allowed the whole software package to
be revised giving the Yellow One so many more features that it
effectively moved up into what had previously been the next more
expensive bracket of features, including the ability to use the new
WAAS satellites.
