The basemap would be mostly empty right around your house, unless you live on a major highway. Here in the US, what is included in the basemaps are interstate highways, state routes, and maybe a half dozen to a dozen or so of the major thoroughfares in a city like Chicago. The maps you buy from Garmin, on the other hand, will include all of the official roads (all those that have some sort of a road sign, or a name), so if you leave your house and ride down Sparrow Court, say, and turn into Penny Lane, for example, you will see each of these little sideroads on your device, labeled and named.
Oh, and the detailed maps typically also contain information on "Points of Interest", like gas stations (yeah, maybe not that important on a bicycle), restaurants and such.
