Gear Noise

I'm always amazed at what a good drivetrain cleaning will do to clear up
unspecified noises and other little problems. Try that first.

Done already--should have noted that in my first post. AAMOF, I even
installed a brand new cassette to no avail. I now have spare cogs.

rubbing, scrubbing sound. Turning the barrel adjusters on the frame and
on the derailleur makes no difference. Chain is C10 HD-L.

Hi Guy, Running a similar gear/chainring combo on my Paramount 50th
(All 10-sp Record BTW) my drivetrain is dead quiet, and the chainline
doesn't get much straighter than this combo on my own bike.

Does your Chainline appear fairly straight in these gear combos? They
should.

The Chain comes up from the Rear Derailleur-Jockey Wheels to the Cogs,
so one thing I would check, would be proper Rear Derailleur Alignment in
relation to the cogs. Could be your RD Hanger is Bent in one fashion, or
another, and it could be cocked in relation to the cogs. Also check that
your Front Derailleur's outward travel-limit, and its alignment-mounting
position is correct.

My new Bianchi when I first got it, had an annoying click-tick, and by
buying a good Shop Bike Stand, I was able to run the drivetrain, and I
pin-pointed the problem to one bad tooth on the 13 tooth Veloce Cog. A
slight polishing with a Dremel, and stone solved that problem.

If you don't have a stand, and can't nail it down by yourself, a good
bike shop will quickly spot the problem, and shouldn't charge you too
much to spot it, and/or fix it also. Mark

yeah take a look at the surfaces to see if any are shiny like i mean
sumpthins gotta be making the noise right?

I had this same problem until I changed the idler wheels in the derailleur.

Now all is quiet again.

I had a similar problem on the 17, 19 and 21 on a Chorus 13-29. Spent
LOTS of time chasing all the things mentioned above without result. In
my case, turned out the noise was actually a VERY slight contact with
the front derailleur cage due to the indexing of the Campy front.
Couldn't see the contact visually, but when I reset the upper and lower
limits on the front derailleur (34-48 compact) and then reset the front
tension, the problem went away. Most probably your problem is
something in the rear, but if all else fails you might try
re-optimizing the front derailleur adjustment.

if its chrome spread a bit of black paint over it?
