  1. I've never really understood the point of having a gearless mountain bike. Appart from that the bike
is simple and has less bits to worry about on it therefore making it more reliable, whats the
    reasoning behind it?

much if not more fun to ride.

Gearless Mountain Bikes suck. PLain and simple. Limited application, and usually more of a liability
    than an advantage.

    Singlespeeds however...

There is nothing to understand. "Ride What Thou Wilt" shall be the whole of the law. If you are
worry about other's bikes more than your own, life is passing you by.

  7. Why should I worry about other peoples bikes! I was merely asking why people rode them

  8. I've heard of top racers choosing to ride gearless and praising it, i dont think their reason of
    choice is "because I can"

For males, it makes you a man instead of a puss.

It makes the women independant, free thinking individuals who can kick some serious ass.

Its very true. I had a friend who rode gearless for a few miles. It really sucked. Downhill was OK,
but walking up every little hill was awful. Having at least one gear would have been a big help.

Really what happened was he broke his chain and it was quite dark, and the chain tool we had worked
very poorly (even more poorly in the dark). After a half-hour of frustration, the chain ended up
    flung into the woods.

Amazingly enough, he found the chain the following year.

I don't think it can, or should be, quantified.

Why does anyone ride a mountain bike? Or any bike?

I have both a mountain singlespeed and a roadie singlespeed.

I ride them because it brings me joy to do so.

And as to those "top racers" who ride singlespeeds; I respectfully disagree with your asessment. I
think THE reason they chose to do so was "because they could."

  12. Top racers race mountain bikes to win! they might enjoy cycling obviously but choosing one bike over
another is a big decision when you're competing at the highest level. especialy when you're
considering riding a bike which is very different to the competitors!!!

I would assume he means a bike fitted with no gears. Such a bike would be useful for coasting
downhill, or pushing like a scooter. It would be capable of having a speed greater than zero. With a
max speed about as fast as this bike:

    I thought he meant these,

    kickbike.com.aux country.htm

Unless he meant riding with no gear on, in which case doesn't Phil the Squid have a few

With all due deference to the "top racers" you've heard of, I know several who got tired of racing
geared bikes in the huge anonymous packs of sport & expert, and went to singlespeed, (which is not
gearless, actually), But their reason (Mine included), was because (they)I can.

And because I found an entirely new aspect to a great sport that draws far more out of me in terms
of acquiring technical skills, physical demands, whole body applications, and takes me back to a
primitive, visceral, bedrock of self-reliance, imprinted in my ancient dna, and I love it. There is
something that can't be communicated through a keyboard about the sense of not relying on gears,
springs, techno-hype, but just getting out there, mano y mano, going at it with just one gear on a
rigid bike. Closest thing was probably stepping into a boxing ring, waiting for the bell. Mamma
ain't there to rescue you. There ain't no bail-out gears or springs or frickin smart-shock to
isolate you from the gritty impact of the experience, or to protect you from your lack of fitness or
skill. You either got it, or you don't. You just cowboy up and make it happen.

OK, I'm done. I tried to address the topic at hand. And I feel like I gave you more of a fair shake

Yes, but that phrase is about lame...

Dave (any "real" cowboy might laugh at you for that :-)

  19. Why don't you go the whole hog and buy a crappy old bike for 10 in your local antiques shop? They
probably wont have modern brakes and a modern frame for you either.

LOL, "the closest thing to using a rigid bike was stepping in a boxing ring with your mama not there

A lot of singlespeeders do convert their old bikes, at least to start. For some of them, it all
starts as a way to give a second life to an old steed.

I can't say that I get it either, but there are a lot of riders getting into it, and they seem to
really enjoy riding them...so there must be something to it. I imagine it adds new challenge to
trails that might otherwise not be that challenging.

Oh, and I think you'll find that a lot of us don't know and don't care what the pros are doing. We
ride simply for the sheer joy of riding.
