2 computers connected to the same streaming audio site will unnecessarily
tie up your network resources. I'd definitely explore sharing one like you
did before. Maybe you cxn run the output of his (or your) computer into an
FM modulator (like the iroc). Then, you can listen on a regular FM radio.

You sure that was optical? If it happened to be a regular line level signal
with RCA connectors, an "isolation transformer" probably would have
eliminated the hum, as in

amp but could never eliminate a low grade hum.

Hmm. Not sure EXACTLY what the question is, but I'm guessing it's "How
can we both play the same stream and keep it in sync?"

If that's it, then the answer really is that you just need to stream
once and split that signal. Your optical cable to the home system is the
right idea, so maybe that just needs some troubleshooting.
I do this at home on one setup and I run optical to a Sony amp.

Do you get music with that hum or is it only hum?
If you're getting music plus the hum, then you should get into your
windows mixer (double-click on the volume control in the task tray) and
make sure all the outputs are muted except wave out. Hopefully the hum
was coming from something like the microphone or cd drive. This should
let you hear only the output you want.

Media players store up a bit before they start playing. We have corporate
broadcasts where computers are receiving the stream at the EXACT same
time, but they're still always slightly offset in playback. It can make a
real racket if everyone doesn't use headphones!

So... did it work?

Haven't tried any fixes yet. I printed out all the notes and gave them to
the uber-geek kid who has a serious case of senioritis ( graduation is in
three weeks) . This means he's more interested in midnight airsoft games out
in the woods and D&D marathons than helping out Mom and Dad at the moment.

Interesting, I was listening to Radio Tam Tam, Senegal , Africa
http://208.45.137.232:8000
and I did connect both computers simultaneously. That was great. But
lucky, I think.
