  1. Having returned from our usual Sunday Brompton ride round Tatton Park
(and as usual too many cakes in the cafe...) we reflected on our youth
and the variety of tandems we then possessed. Is it possible for a
decrepit pair of pensioners, total age 135 years, to
hire/sample/experience riding a modest modern tandem to ascertain the
practicability of such a purchase? Preferably in Cheshire?
    TIA

PS What would be the cost of the beautiful recumbent tandem trike,
complete with windscreen and full touring gear be? More than my car,
    probably!

Well, you are welcome to have a go on ours for a day - but we're in the
dales, which probably counts as too far.

    cheers,

Well I don't live anywhere near, but I do regularly see an older couple
on a tandem, with a rear axle conversion to make it into a trike. They
seem to do a lot of miles and without the balance coordination problems
    of a two wheeler!
Good luck in you quest, I hope you find a suitable answer.

Yes, but not in Cheshire. Drive over to my house in Mid Wales and take the
tandem out any day you like - especially if you like Thursday to Sunday.

Our Dawes is probably worth no more than £380. It's not for sale but the
figure might help you decide if you want one.

I shall email our phone number if you are interested.

Is Derbyshire close enough? The cycle hire places on the Tissington trail
have several varieties of tandem. DH and I tried one out about 3 years ago
and proved fairly spectacularly that we were no good at tandeming. They can
be hired from the top end at Parsley Hay, at the bottom in Ashbourne and at
least one of the inbetween places.

An older couple who normally come on club rides on their hybrids (and
are usually slowest) came yesterday on a tandem and easily kept up with
the group. They clearly got a lot of benefit out of the tandem - which
wasn't at all light or racey.

Bitterly cold wet ride, but curiously enjoyable.

When I was a child my parents had friends who used to race a tandem
tricycle. It was a _very_ fast machine. They were both retired (and
used to visit us in Edinburgh, from their home in Wales, on the trike).

    Claims? Cheek! :-)

That's without a fairing, mind, and I'm not sure exactly what the OP
means by "full touring gear" - a set of Carradice recumbent panniers (no
heel clearance 'cos you don't need any on a recumbent) would set you
back another 95 squid or so.

ICE also do a tandem :-

    http://www.ice.hpv.co.uk/trikes_x2.htm - the X2 comes in at about £4500

and there are a couple of US ones, made by Organic Engines and (I think)
    Wizwheelz.

Many thanks for all replies - really encouraging. Good to know that
ageism shrinks from this group! I think we'll try the tandem hire on the
Tissington trail. I appreciate the kindness of those who offered use of
their own tandems but I won't accept for fear of damaging a precious
    possession.
I was right about the cost of tandem trikes then - would cost more than
both our cars and the scooter together.
    Best wishes for happy miles!
