  1. I set a pot of soup on my porch to cool before I put it in the fridge-
and I just heard this noise outside. I went to check, and there was a
huge raccoon trying to get the lid off the pot! He made a "harrumph"
kind of noise and ran off. It's not completely cooled off yet, but I
wiped off the pot and lid and put it in the fridge 🙂 I like animals and
all, but I don't need 'em eating my dinner...

    This comes from Texas A & M:

    PREPARATION AND COOKING RACCOON
    1 raccoon
    12 small sweet potatoes
    1 med. onion (sliced)
    3 med. carrots
    1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
    salt and pepper
    1 large bell pepper
    1 bottle of barbecue sauce

Dress coon carefully so as not to leave any clinging hair. Remove scent
glands, kernels under legs. Wrap coon in waxed paper or foil and chill
thoroughly or freeze for several hours. Trim off all but a thin layer
of fat and any discolored spots. Wash well in lukewarm water. Put into
3 qt. kettle, add water, salt, and pepper. Heat to boiling; reduce heat
to simmering, cover and cook until tender (1-2 hrs depending on age of
animal). Debone. Place coon in foil lined baking pan. Add remaining
ingredients to baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until
    sweet potatoes are done.

A vaguely similar anecdote?Once, taking a shortcut near my home through
an ally on a cold winters night i saw a big stock pot sitting near a
garbage can, close to the back door of a local 'gourmet' Asian
restaurant, thinking it was being thrown away i dumped out the thin
yellowish liquid and started to carry it away when my ears were
assaulted by a volley of loud and i assume abusive Chinese. I quickly
placed the pot on the ground and scurried away as quickly as i could,
making a mental note to myself not to patronize a restaurant that placed
its food to be served beside a reeking dumpster.

I will say, i have not seen this same phenomena repeated since, and i
still routinely use the alley if not the restaurant.

I had one little bastid make into the house once and *open*

    Raccoon stories:
When we lived in CA, we had a pool and the raccoons would boldly saunter
alongside the pool at night. Our 135# Akita would climb the walls to get
out. One night she was tearing down the drapes to get outside and we let
her out not knowing that it was a raccoon she was going nuts about. When we
went out they were going at it and I'm not sure who was winning. We got a
hose and water-sprayed them away. I think they would've fought to the death.
You're a brave person to corner a raccoon.

I have a close relative who liked to tell tall tales. She said that she and
her husband would go out (on a Saturday night for fun) and capture raccoons
and one night they had 6 of them in their trunk. I still laugh at this
    years later.

It's a movie. One of the characters gets attacked by a raccoon in a car
and freaks out because he thinks he contracted rabies.

Ah well, he was in the house so we didn't have much
choice. Left on his own I'm sure he would have made
himself at home in front of the TV with a bag of chips.
    These critters are amazing.

Thanks for the chuckle. They forgot to add..."in a pinch, possum may
be substituted." Ours are just as aggressive about food as our
marauding racoons and equally unwelcome. The joys of country living.

I had a problem with racoons getting into my trash can a few months ago. It
was smart enough to take the lid off and dig through the plastic bags
looking for stuff to eat. I kept running out when I heard it and scaring it
off. I guess it finally got tired of this. Plus, they like to wash their
food in water and there is no source of water nearby, unless you count my
bird bath. Hmmm, it probably did count the bird bath.

I snuck a recipe like that into a "cookbook" I made for my friend Paula when
she got married to a Yankee from Boston. As she flipped through the recipes
I waited anxiously to see if she'd even notice the BBQ Coon recipe... of
course she did and she laughed her a** off! She asked, "Can I do this in
the crock pot you gave me?!" Paula was a purely southern gal moving up to
Boston. Mike is a great guy but he has that Massachusetts thing: "paaaawk
the caaaaw in the yaaaawd." He sounds like one of the Kennedy's. I could
just picture her making BBQ raccoon and him falling over when he found out
    what it was! 🙂

DH bought two 32 gallon plastic garbage cans to keep bird seed in and some
walnuts. The next time he went to the shed to get some, the cans had been
knawed thru - by squirrels. Had to go to galvanized cans.

I cook soup sometimes outside on a burner, as well as put my rice cooker and
crock pot outside. I'll have to be aware.
We closed our pool two years after we moved here due to almost every morning

  20. Jill, your washing foods tell reminded me of the Resus-Macac
(spelling?) monkey our family once had, whose name was Jerry. We're in
Southern California where it's rather warm year 'round and Jerry lived
outside among the fruit trees. He was comfortably long-strap tied to a
pole, having a large and quilts-furnished barrel to sleep in, as well
as a raised water faucet left on drip to both irrigage the for his
personal use. Jerry also washed all his foods, unless a saved for him
snack may come from my daddy's lunchpail of an evening, which seemed to
us that he simply trusted to be clean. However, one of the funniest
washing foods things he always did was to quickly pack any offered
mashed potatoes into his cheek pouches, only to race over to the water
faucet and try to wash them by the handful. Watching this was quite a
riot, and this little monkey was always so puzzled, though he never
    gave up the try.
