Giant Bicycles

Nothing wrong with Giant bikes except that they don't have a fancy
Italian or English pedigree. They're extremely popular in my club.

When I was looking to step up a notch from my first road bike, a 20+ yr
old Fuji 12 speed, I tried to research the components of the various
brands. It seemed to me that Giant was pretty reasonably priced in
comparison with the other major brands like Trek and Specialized. My
local bike shop carries the OCR1 and OCR3 while another one carries
basically all the Trek models. It seemed like I had a few more models
to choose from with Trek, though there was nothing at all wrong with
Giant. Finally, I never could bring myself to pull the trigger and pay
full price for the components I thought I wanted, so I wound up getting
a nice used bike and getting it fixed up for a total of about $600,
reasoning that they're all used after a while anyhow.

Giant is literally the giant in the bike business. Many of the other brands
frames are made by Giant for them. They make solid bike and have a goot
reputation. I would not hesitate buying one if the fit and price was right.

Most bikes sold in the USA, especially in the under $2000 price range, are made
in a handful of companies in Taiwan and mainland China. That includes pseudo-
Italian brand names like Bianchi and Masi. Giant is the biggest of the
manufacturers, with large factories in both Taiwan and China.

They don't do 7000 series aluminium bikes they seem to monopolise 6000
series aluminium frame production for resellers like GT. I think their
mainland china factories are mainly acquired and are producing mainly
steel bikes but this might change or may even have changed already.

Merida seem to be the best quality factory for 7000 series frames.
Also cheaper manufacturers are abeni and idealbike. Still good quality
but not as good as Giant or Merida.

Taiwan is struggling to compete at the bottom end of pricing so they
are basically moving production to mainland china. Also india and
vietnam are starting to compete for oem orders I believe. Not sure if
any well regarded brands are using them though.

N.American and euro brands are almost exclusively importing most of
their bottom end and mid range bikes or frames. There are exceptions
like Cannondale though.
