It is getting to that time of year. Any picks? The GC in this event seems to be really bland. It seems to be the third most important of the tours for GC and only a few Italian riders try to compete. Personally, I am dissapointed that Valverde won't be there because I think he could have won. On the other side of the coin, the Giro always seems to be a really good sprinters race. Can Cipo win any stages? Any other thoughts? --

It is getting to that time of year. Any picks?
The GC in this event seems to be really bland. It seems to be the third
most important of the tours for GC and only a few Italian riders try to
compete. Personally, I am dissapointed that Valverde won't be there
because I think he could have won. On the other side of the coin, the
Giro always seems to be a really good sprinters race. Can Cipo win any
stages? Any other thoughts?

Forget the stage winners, the sprinters and the pink jersey. The best
part of the Giro now is Hispanic riders going downhill.

Cipo *can* win stages (why is it that nobody ever asks if he will? That's
the real question, isn't it?) Perhaps the giro is suffering from the fact
that it's the first GT of the year. Many riders that have proved themselves
in Italy try to win in France. Failing that, they'll make up in Spain, but
there's no point in trying to make up for a lost season that has hardly
started.
At the same time, with Simoni and Garzelli present, I don't see why the
competition would be so bland. They've both proven to be very capable in the
giro, and some riders that chose the tour (Hamilton, Basso, Leipheimer,
Valverde) would be hard pressed to beat them. In fact, I don't see anyone in
the peloton beating Simoni when he is at the peak of his abilities.

I expect the sprinters battle between Cipo and Peta to be the main
highlight, assuming it isn't completely one sided. GC will merely be
a sideshow.

Garzelli though up until the last minute it'll look like Simoni.

You may call the GC race "bland" - I call it "wide open." Simoni and
Garzelli are getting the most press, of course, and Popovych is also
considered a contender. But the 2004 season so far has been nothing if
not unpredictable. Wouldn't it be wild if someone like Igor Pugaci or
Uros Murn caught just the right sail and landed on the podium?

Garzelli though up until the last minute it'll look like Simoni.
Garzelli hung on tough last year, but simoni is a better climber especially
on those really steep climbs. THe guy can climb up walls! I remember the
Zoncolan stage, he just flew off- 27% at some spots! It could be either
simoni or garzelli.

They could always tame things if they get too exciting, by tossing 35
riders, including the overall points leader for being outside the time
limit.
Though they've tried to keep things above board, by excluding Kelme,
which day will the police raid the team hotels?

to wear for the opening prologue. Last year there wasn't a prologue and he
was gone by the first time trial. You can always count on Cipo to liven
